An admin must have tidied something up in your post. Once that's been done the post can't be edited. Hope that helps explain :flowers:

There was nothing to tidy up.....:o

I've no requirement for the search light group of torches. My view is that if 500 or possibly 1000 lumens isn't enough then check if you have remembered to open your eyes

:lol::lol:

I'd go for the 3-4 18650's torch... More weight, less recoil.

Try carrying an Imolent DX 80, it holds 8 X 18650s, and they do bigger torches!

Overdriving LEDs, more fuel for the flames.

I am still running lab tests with some surprising results. In meantime, something to ponder on.

Interesting paper from Cree themselves, read the summary:

I've read that document before.

I understand pulse current, that's how rectifier diodes work, in some power supplies the current pulse can be several times greater than the load current.

Going over spec is basically ride at your own risk, sometimes it's ok, sometimes it isn't and can result in a much to early failure, junction temperature is often the killer.

There is also the law of diminishing returns re light output against heat generated and shortened lifespan. But LEDs are easily replaced and quite cheap nowadays. My experience with customers who form the market for 9K lumen caplamps is that they are prepared for some trade off.

The XHP series feature their SC5 Technology where one of the features is reliability under higher operating temperatures. They talk 105C, my overheat cuts in at 65C

I just wonder how people will get on with some of the 'supertorches' being produced. Heat generated in a torch has to conduct to the outer circumference, while on a headtorch, at least my current models, from the main beam emitters, its straight into the rear heatsink and ambient.

My lab tests could be better as to return meaningful results I would need an integrating sphere to measure light output, and a much better PSU. The one I have is however adequate for most of my needs. Last bit of fun was an old XML T6 out of a customers upgrade lamp. Already been hammered for years it was driven at 6 amps mounted on a copper sheet. It went for 4 hours continuous.

I dont think that there is any point in continuing without better equipment.

Test gear can sometimes get expensive, and in many cases gets little use, had a fair bit of test gear over the years, mostly second hand, I don't do bench electronics anymore so got rid of most of it, still kept my dual trace 'scope though and my trusty old AVO 8 meter as well as a Variac.

"AVO 8 meter"

Was it the Mk 2 with the 'ins' button?

I don't recall an INS button just the INS position on the AC Volts/Ohms selector switch, the one I have is an AVO 8 MKIV, the one I had previous to that was the AVO Multiminor, but that one was only a 10,000 Ohms Per Volt job, the Avo 8 was a 20,000 Ohms Per Volt job which was better for measuring voltages in high impedance circuits, in fact in some situations it presents less circuit loading than some of the modern digital multimeters.

The AVO's were very good meters, I also had several AVO signal generators, they were all very good.

Years ago, when I was an electrical apprentice, I was working with an electrician, fault finding on a panel. He suddenly realized that the coil of one of the contactors was probably open circuit, and proceeded to check it on the resistance range or his Avominor. The coil was open circuit, but sadly the incoming isolator was not. The flash was visible through the case of the Avo.

Not the first or the last to do that trick.

Always isolate....at least....(SIDE)…:
