Be aware though that the new batches that Tesco are flogging this autumn are only 1Watt.

Will that mean the batteries will last 3 times longer?

I must of had one of the last batches of 3watt then, as i bought 2 of them a few weeks ago...

I had to search around the shelves though as they were pushed to the back behind some other torches.

Wonder if they've realised they are onto a good thing stocking them??.

As good as these are, they don't really compare to the $13 'flood-to-throw' torches you can get from deal extreme; the biggest problem I've had with these unregulated torches is that they can wash out anything too close to you when at full charge. Some of the 7-900 lumen torches you can get hold of from china will drown everything in the vicinity in white light.

Does anyone know where I might be able to get hold of some 4w 2D ones as they are great for special efect lighting when I go tunneling 🙂

The current stock of the AA torches appears to be the 3W version.

As tested a while ago:

It's not the lighting I am after as you can see here http://www.facebook.com/#!/photo.php?pid=5260307&id=691893997&fbid=425755548997  it's the lue tint on this one http://www.facebook.com/#!/photo.php?pid=5264337&id=691893997  I want more of in certain places hence the 4W one from Tesco.

I've bought a 1w version, being and engineer the first thing I did was pull it apart and yes it's nice and well made. There was a finger print on the inside of the lense which I cleaned off with meths. May not be enough light for pictures but ample for finding your way about. However I've found a potential minor problem, the button isn't water tight but this is easy to solve with silicone sealant / instant gasket.

The locking ring is only hand tight and unscrews easely with a tool, circlip pliers will be best, don't try the corner of a screwdriver blade in one of the holes!

The obvious leakage path is between the outer case and siver coloured spacer. The spring/seal is a stiff rubber so I've decided to put sealant on this too, note : the rubber spring and spacer in the picture are upside down relative to the other componants. The sealant is blue.

Left it open for a while to allow the volatiles to evaporate.

Sorry the pictures are out of focus.

Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it.

Bit more... the spacer is now sealed against the case and the rubber spring against the inside of the spacer, a very small bead of sealant round the edge of each conponent was applied.

Err, this is a 10 year old thread and technology not to mention availability has moved forward a bit.

In context of the thread and date....silicone can migrate, sometimes creating a problem...

As said...wise move.

a general comment, sorry if misunderstood.
These torches may have been topical in 2008 when the thread was first opened, now old hat.

Why on earth is the thread revived?
