Had a stroll in Smallcleugh today, the signposting is ludicrous. Every junction and tunnel has big white lettering or arrows, totally unnecessary. There's also a somewhat ruder bit of graffiti in the Wheel Flats - green spray-paint this time. Removed as much as I could but didn't have anything with me other than elbow grease.

Whoever did this get a mine plan and learn to navigate underground. If you need all this signposting then you probably shouldn't be in a mine in the first place.

I cleaned a lot of it off.
The supermarket bitter lemon I carry sprayed all over the letting on the limestone and then wire brushed seems to work.
Just wonder what that stuff does to my guts.

I've a 30-year old bottle of my Dad's Rhubarb and Quince wine in the shed. Diluted 1:100 it'll work better than Hydrofluoric Acid on spray paint. Or maybe I should just save it for when we catch one of these gonks. :devil:

Apparently the Gullyback Crosscut one isn't in G X-cut... A little post lockdown excursion needed with a wirebrush ... then we need to go in the mine and clear up. :curse:

That sounds like a good idea, will have to put some of that and a wire brush in my bag for when I find stuff like this.

I've wirebrushed a fair bit of paint in the mine I visit most, paint on clean rock can be very tenacious and I wondered if burning it off with a blowtorch might be a quick way of removing it.

Solvent-based removal can be highly effective, though underground a chemical filter mask is essential and limiting the duration of cleaning sessions advisable.

In some places I have been it simply wipes of as never had properly dried , at browns folly I remember me and my mate smelt it had seen to strange looking characters earlier on and guessed it was them quickly on their pursuit we was following there arrows removing them after a while the arrows stopped and we suspected they heard as and hid :lol:

Ent sure if there still in there the two lads now still trying to find their way out :lol:

I had exactly the same experience in there years ago with the late Dom Jackson who posted as "Dark Prince".

some of the worst stuff I've seen had been thickly applied from an actual large tin of emulsion that some lunatic had gone into the mine with and then discarded. But sometimes the walls have a sort of muddy coating on them which lets paint be taken off very quickly.

It’s very annoying isn’t it , in my opinion if people can’t navigate a mine without spray painting arrows they shouldn’t be in there also the same as leaving glow sticks behind , when I started I always remembered artefacts also in my local mines all the tunnels are numbered in old paint so it was easy , still people spray arrows on the walls everywhere ...:curse:

I'm completely baffled by this. Even *if* in some parallel universe it was appropriate to write directions on walls somewhere you don't own, wouldn't a stick of chalk rather than paint be the obvious choice. This vandalism seems stupidity on top of idiocy.

Maybe someone should spray a big "No painting on walls" notice near the entrance 🙂 or if you can find where they live, spray "way in" on their front door, during the night
