Hello

Is there a comprehensive list or gazetter anywhere of the remaining pit head gear and / or winding engines still left standing in the country?

There used to be a website on remaining headgear, the list from 2006 is on Shropshire Mines, but it is out of date (i.e. some of them have gone incl. Annesley, Welbeck, Williamthorpe, Ellington, Longannet, Riccall, Stillingfleet, Wistow. And they have missed of at least one (Swanwick Common Pit)

http://shropshiremines.org.uk/misc/other/min_head.htm

I have heard of a list of engine houses as well, but can not think whereabouts it is (it should of course be on NAMHO website)
I went in a mine once.... it was dark and scary..... full of weirdos

Not in Shropshire, one of my uncles was winderman at Swanwick - Derbyshire. 😉 😉

Here is one to think about.
There is a headgear at Barbot Hall Borehole (Rotherham). It used to be a very large diameter borehole, sunk to as a pumping station to pumping water from the working coal mines in that area.

http://www.aditnow.co.uk/mines/Barbot-Hall-Pumping-Station-Shaft/

What would you class this as?
And can anyone think of anything else like it?

Plus there are headgear/winding engines associated with mines other than coal too.

They should be on the UK list in the original link above to the Shropshire Mines page

Not on the list yet is the tandem steel headgear at North Dalton pumping station which was for public water supply. Located in County Durham at NZ 408478.

Boulby Potash Mine at NZ 761180 at present has three headgears but only two shafts. A steel structure is under construction beside the drawing shaft to replace its concrete headgear later in the year.

Yes, I'll have it - what is it?

Erm, actually 3 shafts, if you include the one on the cliff. Sorry, need to get out of the Day Centre more often.

Yes indeed, Boulby mine has three shafts; the third one near the cliff takes the effluent down to the outfall adit. But the head of the shaft including the headgear is within a conventional looking building and is therefore hidden from view.

Whether you include that in a list of headgears depends on your criteria.

The shaft mentioned by RJV for Boulby Alum Quarry is still there but infilled and hidden for most of the past century.

Yes, I'll have it - what is it?

If you want a decent list of all the headstocks that are still standing, then post this up with each location and I'll add it to the list:
The name of the mine or shaft;
Whether it's preserved, derelict, converted or a museum;
A brief description of the mine buildings around the headstocks;
A link to the mines aditnow page;
The Google map coordinates.

I'll update it properly tomorrow.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
