This was posted on the BMC facebook page today

"Anyone seen this guy's graffiti in the Llanberis slate quarries? We're not entirely convinced that his plans for 20ft murals are a great idea..."
http://bntl.co.uk/site/7-days-with-jack-murray/

We see such a lot of graffiti underground, very old inscriptions, and for example the pictures of animals in moel fferna are very nice. Some frown upon seeing modern graffiti by explorers in mines as it has not been done by the people who worked in the mine? Just wondering what peoples opinion on this is, out of interest, and has anyone seen this graffiti in the quarry? I like graffiti art but, like the bmc, not so sure about this stuff.

Now, I love a bit of good graffiti. My Cousin get's paid to do it, and I've dabbled in the past.

That said, this stuff is, quite bluntly, ****. Not to mention wildly out of place. I would see a point (albeit, not a fantastic one), if he'd sprayed a decent Mural reflecting the area, history or similar, but even well done "traditional" graffiti would look wrong here.

Yes good point, probably exactly why he did it to 'raise his profile' rather than make an artistic statement.

If I ever catch anyone underground with a spray can it will require major surgery to remove it from their anotomy.

What is it about a clean wall or rockface that brings this out in some people.
Art belongs in an art gallery not daubed all over our countryside.
Mindless daubings belong nowhere.
My avatar is a poor likeness.

I like the comments on his website... pretty much everybody telling him he's a vandal.

Seconded - seems some dickheads have been putting arrows in Masson again (presumably because they've discovered the map app on their phone doesn't work underground) so there's going to have to be yet another wire brush party going in to sort it out....

I'll reserve judgement until I see the finished art in the flesh, however with the lack of any talent what so ever so far displayed it looks like my vote will be going to vandalism rather than art.

On a brighter note I can't see the paint lasting long exposed to Welsh weather anyway.

We could always clean it up after then bill him for the work 😉

I think if any more of his 'art' appears he's going to get himself lynched by some very angry climbers.

I particularly enjoyed the comment about them finding his flat and bolting up it.

So you're saying you are prepared to admit you might like it and think it was a good idea?

I work on the basis of trying to leave as little evidence as practically possible that I was there at all...

Unless you've paid for it and own it, best not to draw on it!

That said perhaps with permission and using some sort of waterbased temporary paint it could be more acceptable?

Well if the guy's work turned out like this

I wouldn't complain.

That's a nice reminder, must get a trip down Braich Goch with Corris Mine Explorers before his pictures bio-degrade.

It might be worth postponing the lynching until someone checks if it's permanent or not. It could just be a publicity stunt...[i]

"it was definitely worth the 6 hour drive"

If he drove 6 hours to do that sounds like he has far too much spare time!!

If he goes back and does more it will just encourage others to do the same and vandalise other parts of the quarry, how long before a "piece" appears inside one of the old workers huts? or on a drumhouse?

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
