These pictures are of some graffiti in a stone mine. Can anyone tell me what they represent?
The first two look like barbecue griddles!
One thought is that they are pictures of mine trucks, as seen from directly above. But this would be a strange way to show them - pictures of trucks and wagons usually show them in profile.

There are similar marks in the Chaldon quarries. I suggest these are specifically quarry-related, or at least pillar-and-stall workings related. If I can find some photos I will post them up.

Here is one. I will look for more which are more like the ones first posted.

The third photo in the original query reminded me of this :

What these suggest to me is it's a marking for someone to cut a chog hole. Well, the ones on the roof, anyway.

I can't comment on anything other than the photos I posted, but there are no chogholes in Chaldon - no cranes, and all stone blocks were small enough to be man-handled.

There are no chog holes in the quarry that the original photo's came from and no evidence of cranes either.

We do know that there were a number of ponies used underground to pull the trucks.

If someone can come up with a convincing interpretation of these marks it will be the fourth example for me of how something clarified in one region can explain something similar elsewhere. It was the revelation to me of the Swanage quarr cart design that allowed the identification of remains of something very similar in the Merstham quarries, and the stone candle/tinder box from the Whittington quarries that identified a similar item in Chaldon, and the identification of ritual protection marks in Goatchurch Cavern that resulted in the discovery of similar marks in Chaldon.

Yes, there is a definite similarity.
What does this one show?
