Would be very interested in a trip to Rhosydd on Sunday May 11th. Pete (Hamster) is also interested and we may have a couple of other experienced people with us as well 🙂

I have read a little on the eastern workings somewhere on here and on mine explorer. Does anyone know how difficult they are to access? squeezes, assisted climbs etc?

I understand that they are/were tricky to locate?

Dead easy!

At the sheave wheels turn left, continue for a few chambers and look for a route up on the right. It's fairly obvious, it almost looks like an incline covered in slate waste... and you'll see some bits of metal poking out from the slate.

Go up to the top of this chamber and squeeze through the fallen (but well wedged!) blocks. Then once squeezed continue in the direction you were going and you'll hit the first of beginning of the eastern workings.

Take a printout of Speedy's map and you'll be able to work out where you are.

Once you're up 2 floors, and at the top of the 2nd incline (complete with very nice winder) the route further east in up and over in the collapsed chamber. Take care in here, it is a bit sketchy.

I'll check chamber numbers later tonight to give you a better idea of how many chambers beyond the sheave wheel.

Many thanks for the instructions Simon. Can't seem to find Speedy's plan. I looked in the info section under Rhosydd but can only see the plan etc from the Rhosydd book.

Come to think of it I don't seem to recall ever seeing it?

Will check chamber numbers when I get home or tomorrow morning so i can at least tell you how many chambers beyond the sheaves before you need to start looking upwards!

My thoughts too. We had a look last year and the accessible bits are not that extensive - 3 or 4 up and 3 or 4 across, unless I missed a route through. We were a bit rushed so I'm keen to return.

If anyone's up for it, I'd like to pop into the western side afterwards and have a look up the aforementioned dodgy rope, or rather the decent rope beside the very dodgy wall. 😮

With Steve and Willy guiding the way you'll be fine :)

The route up is chamber F or G, the sheave is A, so it's 5 or 6 chambers across.

It's a reasonable extensive area, you can get up to floor 4 IIRC so you're going up 5 floors. And you an get all the way across to chamber P.

I've looked at that ascent up to the 5/9 incline winder and filed it under "not blooming likely" The up part would be fine, the down part would be fine too. It's the across part that bothers me

Found the following information (I think on this forum a while back and saved it pending a possible explore of this area.)

If I remember rightly, think it was Speedy's posting so I hope he dosn't mind me posting it here again.

If I understand correctly the original plan contains only a conjectural lay out of the eastern workings, so the following information builds on this. (The original can be found in the Rhosydd documents section on this forum)
There may have been some limited extraction of slate from this area after the fall, but i'm not sure.

"Floor 8 had been extended by 1 chamber (Ch. H)
- Floor 7 had been extended by 2 chambers (Ch. H and I)
- The remains of an incline winding drum and gear can be found at Fl. 7 where chambers G & H
have been opened into each other.
- An incline with an fully intact winding drum and breaking system had been built between Fl. 7 &
6 in Ch. I.
- Floor 6 had been extended by 1 chamber (Ch. N)
- Floor 5 had been extended by 1 chamber (Ch. P)
- Chambers K, L, M, N, & O had been opened up to Floor 4 but no further."
