Apparently Stanier was bored with living in the 1800s so decided to leave Swindon and explore new concepts like perhaps the extra set of wheels might be useful afterall... the product was certainly better than the not so GREAT BEAR  😉

As for Mr Fowler.... I agree! 🙂
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh Creeper!!!!!

It's at Butterley. There's plenty to see, and they let you into the workshops.

Tyseley isn't open most of the time now 😞

Thanks for the update. Very bad news on Tyseley as we spent some very happy times there, could go anywhere, wander all over the tracks etc and partake of a cup of tea in the volunteers cabin. 🙂

Suppose H & E has stopped all that? 😞

I expect so. 😞

I remember about 15 years ago, you could wander in amongst the locos and climb into the cab. Them Jubilees are dead inpressive! 😮

Butterley is well worth a visit, as is Peak Rail at Rowsley, where there is the Shunter preservation trust: there's a very good guided tour.

Thanks. I'll have to get up to butterley for a look.

Last time we were at Tyseley we spent an hour being 'smoked' in the cab of a loco belonging to Pete Waterman, (I think).
Arrived back in Wales covered in grease and smelling like a charcoal burners overcoat, magic. 😉

Absolutely fascinating - vaguely reminiscent of the Amber film about the sea-coalers in Northumberland, but much more authentic.

Thanks for posting the link!

Yes, thanks for the link Morlock. I know there's a follow-up film about the making of the documentary and that Pete died...I often wonder what happened to the traction engines. Superb film and still thought-provoking today.

Hi Teigl,

There's a post on YouTube that says that the Allchin is alive and well and living in Ireland with the Jenkinson family.

IIRR, I think I saw it either at the Pickering Rally or a steam day at Beamish a few years ago

Nothing about the Fowler, though, so here's one in the Kirkstall Industrial Museum in Leeds:
