How many photographs are on the site now?

That's the question. In the Photographs pull-down it says there are in excess of 30,000, but I don't know how up to date that is.

Is there an easy way to tell?

The highest ID is 44,436 but the actual real count of photographs will be somewhat less. Due to numbers not necessarily being completely sequential in the early days and people deleting their images for various reasons.

Have just queried the database. We have:

Available photos: 37,792
Deleted photos: 3,087

So not quite 38,000. And amazingly nearly 1 in 10 images uploaded have been deleted 😞

Cheers. I ask for a reason. Here in Leeds the Central Library service maintains a photographic database of Leeds called Leodis.

I went for a tour around and saw that a database of around 50,000 photographs needs a full time staff of 4 people.

Unlikely I think, most photos posted in personal albums stay in personal albums. A few get deleted and moved, but not many.

It'll be a mixture of some uploaded to the wrong album and then being deleted prior to upload, and photos just being removed.

Obviously peoples' photos are theirs to remove if they wish, I would never impose any limitation on them or claim any form of ownership over them. It is a pity to see mass deletes though (happens only very occassionally) because it's contrary to the aims of the site of providing a permenant record.

Well at least Simon can be safe in the knowledge that ICLOK will never remove his. It'd probably take as long to delete them all as it did to take them!

Could a lot of the deleted ones simply people be temporarily removing them to edit or brighten them or even simply deleting them because they weren't very good?
