It would be a good idea, but even better if it also had two specific purposes:

1) to invite members to help identify and add to an item's provenance

2) to publish already established provenance thereby enhancing others' knowledge on sites they study.

One thing that should be guarded against is promoting collection by squirrels of items that are best left where they are.

With that in mind, there are plenty of in situ artefacts that could be recorded and added to such a gallery, provided precise locations are kept vague enough.

One reservation I've got about stating this as a purpose is if people attempt to use the site to establish false provenance for faked items - I'm just mindful that we've had problems in the past with attempts to use AN to validate claims about "questionable" items of alleged value....

Whilst its not quite the same thing, there is scope for grouping related photographs together in public galleries though as though updates don't appear to show on the home page I presume they are rarely viewed.

Thanks James and RJV.

Artifact photos are I guess best placed in personal albums, and then grouped in a public Favourites (used to be called lightbox) collection.

RJV is right though, the Favourites feature doesn't get used that much (relatively) because they're not showcased on the home page. When I originally built it I saw it more as a means of grouping photos from all over the site than a showcasing individuals' best photos - but I guess both usages are equally valid.
