There was a thread on here about the pros and cons of artifact removal a couple of months back. I have just heard of an incident that proves the argument some people were making.

Some years ago, various items were purchased from Maen Offeren for preservation by myself. Subsequently some items were sold on due to a change in circumstances. Amongst these items were two manriders (or man wagons as Maen Offeren used to call them). One of them is illustrated here.

I have learnt this evening that both of these have recently been broken up. They were not offered elsewhere or even properly photographed or measured. The reason being "no longer space for them".

I am sure you can imagine my feelings on this matter!

Did the new owner have a storage agreement for them? and if not had they been informed of any storage costs being levied? any thing asking the owner for storage costs outstanding? ... if not whoever the owner is should be down their solicitors... been here before...

However if the owner was given a timescale to get the stuff off site... be careful... small print job! :surrender:

He bought them from me about 6 or 7 years ago since when they have been in his garden. He wanted room for something else so just broke them up without even giving anyone else an opportunity to have them.

Makes you wonder how safe are the other welsh slate industry items he has are! :guns:

There are, I think, two more where those came from. One can just hope that they find better homes 😠

True, but the two that were broken up were much older. I bought them in 1974 (although not collected until 1975). One of them came staright off the main incline into my ownership (the one in the photo) whereas the other one came from an incline far underground form the level that they had just ceased using. Probably G or H.
