Wanted to put this in the archive but I don't really have any details so wasn't sure where to put it! Thought I would share it anyway. Its a photo of my grandad, on the right when he was about 15 years old and working as a putter. I dont know who the older guy on the left is who was presumably a coal filler, or hewer.

This would have been taken in the late 1920s and I have just been sent this from my Dad. I had no idea about it existed until a few days ago.

Havent posted a picture before so I hope this works!

Nice photo to have - I recently re-found some of my Grandad / greatgrandad at Sneyd.
It must if been at the start of your Grandads shift as they both look incredibly clean!!
We inhabit an island made of coal, surrounded by a sea full of fish. How can we go wrong.......

Sure did! My dad found it at his mother's house and it was trashed and torn, but they got a local photographic shop to stitch it back together.

Well they did a pretty good job, it's not obvious.

Thanks for posting this - it is quite rare to have pics like this underground. My family were coal miners but never left any pics of the mines unfortunately.

I see a pit pony is there as well.

To be honest we don't know who actually took the photo or why! Its a bit of a mystery really as my dad remebers his dad showing him it back in the 60s but then it got put away in a drawer and forgotten about.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
