A new event has been added to the Events page.

Event name: Pool Parc Winch Trip - August 2011

Date & time: 20/08/2011 at 10:00

Details:
Somthing a bit different for August...

First thing I'd better say is this is part mine, part cave (see, you can say cave here). I think it may be a little more cave than mine, but it starts off with a winch descent and laddered mined section and has some good mining graffiti.

Ogof Llyn Parc, the largest cave in North Wales, with a vertical range of 110m.

Accessed via a 92m shaft, followed by two further 18m pitches (laddered).

Mined sections date from around 1860s.

Don't be put off by the fact its a cave - there is a mine too! Like the Castleton area it becomes hard to determine where the mine ends and the cave starts because the miners used the cave to save themselves some digging!

Access has been aranged via NWCC, they'll guide us round.

This is a winch trip, but SRT kit is required, as is BCA insurance.

There is a waist deep section of water near the start of the trip, after which the system is pretty dry - wet underfoot in places.

Once you're past the wet section it gets warm, so don't wetsuit it, just man up.

Take something warm to leave at the base of the winch shaft to put on while waiting to be winched back up.

Oh, and as its based near World's End assume it'll be raining and miserable when you get back to the surface.

Cameras are worth taking for some excellent mining graffiti.

The trip isn't too difficult, there is some scrambling and a couple of low crawls- knee pads are a good idea. (note this is largely based on a description by Rockchick so read into "not too difficult" what you will - she thinks we're all a big bunch of wimps).

A contribution each towards the annual cost of running the winch is required.

And we'll need at least one person with a 4x4 with tow bar to tow the winch across the moor.

it's a few fixed ladders, a hand over hand rope (which may now be a short rope ladder), crawling in a few shortish sections (over pointy gravel) and some fab crawling/ sliding/ sliping muddy fun! what's not to like?!

I wouldn't mind getting on this trip but I have heard the north wales don't allow photos to be taken.

Rockchick is going to clarify that for us. Certainly no mention of this was made to me when arranging the trip with them.

That's a good question. I don't know! I suspect probably not - but will ask 🙂

Not really- partly coz it'd be so slow!! Ropes won't be put down unless they're needed.

In North Henblas Shaft I think jcam beat the winch

Mind you I think it was winching Vanoord at the time and it had to stop for a few breathers 😉

Any news yet on the situation down there with taking photos?

Lee,

I believe the ban on photos/videos exists to prevent publicity and awareness. I don't know if it applies to all NWCC caves/mines but it certainly does apply to some and it did apply the last time UCET members ventured down (I declined the invitation because of it).

GCC operated the same policy with the Milwr tunnel and went so far as to suspend some of it's members because they appeared in a video I did even though I wasn't aware that there was a ban on videos/photos. 😠

Simon,

The standing record for SRTing up North Henblas is 12 minutes (it's 330 feet). The Winch takes 8 minutes to reach the top if the cage is already at the bottom. If you know that someone has beaten the winch that would be really awesome.

🙂

I've double checked on this with NWCC and photography is allowed, but please don't post your photos up anywhere. :flowers:

So, the ban on "publishing" photos/videos does still exist. 😞

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
