Ed...as you've done it before how long do you reckon Saturday's trip will take. Assuming I don't get stuck in the squeeze that is...

Cheese shop?

Nobody told me this could be a weekend spent in a pub with a bit of cheese shopping thrown in for good measure!

As its meant to be warm a few late afternoon options to bide time till beer o'clock could be:

http://www.pdmhs.com/MagpieMine.asp
http://www.hartingtoncheeseshop.co.uk/index.asp

None more than 20 minutes or so away.

you could be really enthusiastic and get two mine in in one day- Youlds and Temple, then again, maybe Temple doesn't count since it's a 'show' mine these days!

RVJ - Thanks for the link to the Hartington cheese shop 😉 I didn't know it had reopened. Must send my lad off to get some Derby Sage Original and Hartington Blue Stilton.

I didn't know it had shut though it must be four or five years since I was last there. The website certainly gives the impression that its up and running.

Having looked through their online shop I have to say I'm stuggling to see the benefits of a day underground in some grubby little hole over a day spent by the village duck pond with a good book, a basket of cheese and a bottle or two of gooseberry wine!

RJV - Your suggestion is ideal! I can see the ducks on the pond in my mind's eye. Alternatively if Hartington was full of tourists (not quite as bad as the droves who flock to Matlock Bath!) then a few minutes drive would take one down to the Manifold Valley, where one could pick a quiet spot ideal for a picnic by the river instead. Then there is of course the added bonus of Ecton Copper Mines, caves, archaeology and the remains of the Manifold Light Railway where one drives through the Swainsley tunnel. I won't dream on.

Incidently the old cheese shop closed about four years ago, it was run by Dairy Crest who didn't take online orders. I see the new owners have been there for about two years, do online shopping, which is a bonus if you live miles away.

A clue to timing was in my original ' report'
I believe it took two of us 5 Hrs.
What's more we ran to warm up down from the connection (read squeeze! ) to Jants.
All depends on how much digging is needed, and how many piccies you take.
What time is the rendezvous?

Yeah i would guess about 5 ours depending on the group and how long we mess about for. There is not a whole lot to photograph in there and am considering going armed with just a drink and a mars bar

What time are we meeting in the car park btw?

Don't agree about not much to photograph in there, it's a great trip with some of the best mineral deposits of mines I've been in, fantastic pipe workings and an incredible coffin level. As for the time; it took edd, myself and two others 3.5 hrs on our first trip, and I got well and trully stuck in the 2nd squeeze to the point of stripping off oversuit. This time, Owd Git, a mate Dave and myself have decided to follow a little later so that the squeezes have been kindly cleared out!

Ha ha i do remember that trip well. Very nice mineral deposits but i am thinking of the travel light part for the coffin level

There is actually a note written after the squeezes saying "not fat people" i believe

Where does that leave the more big-boned AN members then??? So long as its after the squeezes I don't suppose it matter too much!

(Lab Rat has had to pull out, as has Owt and Joydivisionovengloves)

For people coming up Saturday morning, we'll be meeting at Artists Corner at 10am which is here:

Persons wedged in the squeezes will have to make their own overnight arrangements.

Peter and Adam, look forward to seeing you in the pub later!

Sunday: proposed trip involves quite a big drop and ascent, although option exists to ascend up a couple of shorter pitches which sounds good to me

See you all there!
