Event name: Cwmorthin Incandescent Trip 2010

Details: Something Vanoord muttered about some time ago... with all the advances in LED lights over the past few years can we remember what things were like in the days of... bulbs?

And given I just realised the site has been running for just over 5 years now we thought it would be a good time for a nostalgic re-visit of mine exploring the way it used to be.

LED lights banned. Maglites and Petzl Glooms welcome. And any other incandescent hand / head torches.

No uber-powerful halogen spotlight jobs either!

Everybody must have a helmet and head torch at least.

Trip will be the usual Cwmorthin back vein to old vein round trip, with a few deviations off around floors F and G, more if there is demand and time. So it'll be a good explore for people who haven't explored Cwmorthin before, and an old-skool trip for those that have!

You'll get wet feet at the bottom of the back vein incline.

Intended as a bit of fun, and a bit of a trip down memory lane.

Bring lunch and we'll set aside plenty of time for a lunch stop with candles for added atmosphere.

I have a Pile Wonder somewhere - dates fro mthe 70s I think and uses an Eveready bell battery. It should be good for at least 3 or 4 metres of visibility 😉

It has been a few months now since I have been down under at Cwmorthin. So I will come along using an old torch.
I have still got my old 6 volt bulb type torch, you know the one with two batteries with the coil springs at the top.
I converted it to a rechargable about 10 years ago.
I still use it occationally for seing what I am doing under the lorry.

Hmm... have to put some thought into this, several strips of burning magnisium strip should do as a replacement! Think cordite burns brilliant white!

Oooo the delights of bulbs that last 5 minutes and spending the rest of the technical bits of the trip with a vile tasting mini rubber torch in my mouth. Memories of my first ever trip underground in Cwmorthin.

Actually a candle light trip sometime would be quite an interesting experience. It is amazing how much light you get out of a candle.
I have a few of the older type candles from the time when my Grand father was a miner at Fotty before they started using cap lamps.
