There have been various comments (including my own) in this thread about making a weekend of it. Whilst I don't want to pre-empt Simon's organisation as the originator of this event, here's my suggestions.

That all sounds good to me Dave.

We may manage to get Ystrad Einion done on the Saturday, which would free up Sunday completely, and am more than happy to be led by yourself and Roy as to where to go on the Sunday. This isn't an area I have explored greatly or one I profess to any massive knowledge about so am very happy to take advice.

Will post Saturday meet up location ASAP.

Could everybody indicate if they're intending to just come for Saturday or if they're making a weekend of it please?

I suggested Ystrad Einion for the Sunday rather than the Saturday because (a) it's a bit out on a limb from Talybont, (b) it's likely to be on the way home for most people and (c) it's a relatively easy drive though the forest from the Henfwlch area down into Cwm Einion.

However, I'm happy either way.

... and in response to Simon's question - I'm intending to be there Saturday and Sunday, staying in/near Talybont.

I am easy to whichever way everyone wants.
There is a good campsite at Morben Isaf which is on the main road between Machynlleth and Talybont.

I can be at Bwlch Glas in the afternoon, and may even meet people coming up the pitch or whatever, and we could have a Chinese parliament about what to next depending on the time. If there is a number of people, we could split up for the Sunday or whatever.

Ystrad Einion is a short trip, I cant see more than a couple of hours in there, Henfwlch would probably be 3 or 4 for a group, Talybont is going to probably be a whole day because of queuing for the pitches according to my experience. Brynyryfr is very short, doubt more than 1 hour plus the walk over to it.

Thanks for the heads up on the campsite Roy, will likely stay there.
Cheers

Have the events been finalised yet on this?

I can be up at Bwlch Glas about 1500 hrs to meet everyone coming out, when you all do, whatever the time.
As I know the area well, I am willing to take whatever people want both Sat late afternoon, time permitting, and the Sunday.

Who wants to do what, who has ideas?

Talybont, together with what I hope is in initial interesting interpretive walk around what was the site of the lower mine, would be a Sunday all day trip. The lower site has 2 Pelton turbines originally used for generating electricity.
Alternatively, there is Henfwlch, with probable time to do Brynyryfr later. I will go whichever way people want.

I do think though, that as far as Sunday goes, we should bend towards favouring the wishes of those who have driven all the way from up north.

Talybont sounds good to me for the Sunday.

I'd like a look at Ystrad Einion waterwheel too but will probably see if I can find that on Friday.

The Talybont trip is well worth doing, including the surface features, but I went paddling in the deep adit last month so will probably look for something else to do this Sunday. I'd also like a look at Ystrad Einion on either Saturday afternoon or Sunday.

Also is there anyone able to give me a lift up to Bwlchglas from Talybont (or further afield)?

I'll have an attempt at finalising them :)

Meet up at 10am, suggest at the mine here http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=270950&y=287850&z=0&sv=SN709878&st=5&mapp=map.srf&searchp=ids.srf  (zoom out one step for a very clear map). It's easy to find, and there is a good layby for parking. If people have any worries about finding the mine we could meet somewhere in Talybont.

Full SRT kit will be needed for Bwlchglas.

We'll meet up with Roy after Bwlchglas, and have a bit of a discussion about where to go Saturday afternoon and Sunday. Ideas:

Ystrad Einion (quick trip if the gate is not locked)
Talybont
Henfwlch / Brynyryfr

Agree with Roy - would be reasonable to go with the wishes of people who have travelled long distances for the weekend as regards Sunday.

Also open to suggestions for where to eat and a watering hole for Saturday night :)

Can everybody who is coming along please confirm in this thread?

+ Meeting Roy after Bwlchglas

Is everybody happy meeting at the mine on the Saturday, it's quite easy to find, but I'd definintely recommend printing off a copy of the map, there is a fair distance on minor roads to travel...

Davel - no need to reply, got your email thanks

Is everybody happy finding the mine? And happy with deciding what to do later Saturday PM, where to eat and drink Saturday night and what to do Sunday when we all meet on Saturday?

I have to say, I misread Roy's earlier post suggesting a Chinese Parliament as a Chinese Meal and thought, hey, the weekend is getting better every minute

I'll be travelling to Talybont by bus and staying there on Friday and Saturday nights, and I would welcome the offer of a lift to the mine on Saturday morning

NB also I won't have internet access after midday Friday.

Can't we have both the Parliament and the Meal?

I will be in the area on Saturday but I doubt that I would be able to give you a lift in my Mazda, that is asuming that you would want to travel in it. Most peolple would decline.
I stopped for a bloke thumbing a lift, he shook his head and waved me away.

Anyway, back to sense, I will probably be doing something else in the area and wont be at Bwlch Glas until 1500 at least.
Sorry.

If you still need a ride Skimble, I can pick you up Saturday morning in Talybont. I don't know the area at all though so if you could suggest somewhere to meet?

Wow that was quite a weekend, lost count of the number of mines visited by the end, one was so good it got two visits.

As an introduction to mines in Mid Wales I think that would take some beating, especially with Roy's encyclopedic knowledge of the mining history of the area.

Some of the highlights for me were Ystrad Einion and Bwlch Glas, Valma's garden and Talybont.

There were also a couple of things that, on balance I probably wouldn't do again, camping in a bog next to enclosures full of jungle animals who got into full voice every night was one and Roy's sheep cemetery was possibly another, pleased I didn't have to share a car with that rope afterward!

Many thanks to Simon and to Roy for organising it, it was another very memorable weekend.
