A new event has been added to the Events page.

Event name: Smallcleugh for beginners

Date & time: 08/02/2009 at 10:00

Details: An easy trip into one of the well preserved mine workings in the Nent Valley near Alston.

Smallcleugh is an easily accessible mine and very popular with mine explorers because of the well preserved mining features and the variety of different trips possible.

We will visit several different flats and vein workings including the Incline Flat and the Ballroom, there will be opportunity for photography.

The trip will involve no ropework. There will be a little very easy scrambling and some crawling but if you're careful you should manage to keep your feet dry in wellies!

The trip is intended for those who have done little or no underground exploration or those who are unfamiliar with this mine.

A reminder and a local weather report for those intending to come along to Smallcleugh tomorrow.

Meet in the Heritage centre carpark for 10am.
The main roads around here are all clear and well salted, the carparking in Nenthead however is limited. There will likely be a few spaces on the road in the centre of the village but the carpark itself has not been cleared and whilst fine for 4wd might be a bit challenging without.

We will have a 4wd, a tow rope and plenty shovels but if anyone wants to park elsewhere (eg the layby at Killhope Cross is cleared and spacious) then we can collect you from there and ferry you down to Nent then back after.

I seem to have overlooked this event, though I was planning to be at Nenthead then anyway, so I may see you all there.

It's useful to know there may be a tow-rope and 4x4 about...

It thought the barrel had moved, so I checked my pictures from 17th Jan; it has, a lot...:ohmygod:

I think the far side is still the same size, but the rest of the barrel has closed up to that size; it's no longer funnel shaped...

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
