A new event has been added to the Events page.

Event name: Rhiw Bach for Beginners

Date & time: 30/08/2009 at 10:00

Details: One of a series of "easy" trips.

This is intended as a gentle day out to Rhiw-bach slate mine, for those who haven't been there before. The trip will take about 3-4 hours underground and will not involve ropework.

Rhiw-bach is a relatively small underground working compared to the Blaenau Ffestiniog 'giants', but has the advantage of being one of very few 'through trips' where you can enter the mine from one entrance and leave from another, higher up the valley.

Depending on the weather, the trip may also include a look around the ruined mills at the top of the site and the incline, up which finished slate was hauled so it could be taken across to the other side of the mountain to be trans-shipped to the Ffestiniog Railway.

This trip is open to all, but is intended or those who have either not visited Rhiw-bach before or who wish to have a gentle introduction to mine exploration.

Rhiw-bach and it's tramway have an interesting history and if you are new to mine exploration this is a great initiation.

Wet it was, indeed. For those who may have missed the video of the last trip here it is http://www.toadstone.com/aditnow/rhiwbach/

I've made it much larger in format and it streams in from my server hopefully. You will need to download the Quicktime Player which is free. If you are using an Apple Mac then it should already be installed in your browser. Quicktime http://www.apple.com/quicktime/

For the technocrats the original HD file is 3gig + the streaming version is only 55meg. There is loss in quality but I think it is very acceptable. Duration 5 mins

That's a great bit of film! 🙂

I do like what I think is 'DaveL goes boating' clip, just before the 'Titanic' underwater sequence 😉

Thanks Vanoord, Quicktimes codec for video seems to work OK, although I still have to process the original HD files from the camcorder separately in Voltaic HD before editing them. The MS Windows route is just as long winded. I found the trick is to keep sequences short, that way it helps editing.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
