Due to there being two entries for the Boulby trip and two forum discussions I have done some housekeeping (with sparty_lea's permission) and have locked this thread to avoid any confusion.

This is now the correct thread for discussion of the trip.

Please can everybody who has received an invite please confirm their attendance here:

If the trip is fully subscribed and you'd like to go on the reserve list then please post on the correct new forum thread or contact sparty_lea, thanks.

Yes Cleveland Potash are extremely welcoming and the mine itself is one every explorer should see at least once.
Too late once its abandoned that's for sure.

Do people have any idea how long a life the mine has now?

The potash deposit seems to go all the way under the North Sea to Germany so they won't run out any time soon. The answer really depends on the price they get for their potash, its about quadrupled over the last year so they're optimistic at the moment.
They've just invested quite heavily in new plant and are talking of another twenty years at least but who knows.

How often do Boulby let people visit? I would love to go up there someday, maybe next year, all dependant on when I pass the infernal driving test (young one here...).

They have visits once a month. They are very popular though and you need to contact them early in the year or you may find they are fully booked for the rest of that year.
I think there are still quite a few people want to go who couldn't make it this time for one reason or another so I shall book another trip for next year and post details up here as soon as I have a date from them.

Boulby must be pretty close to the East coast mainline, I'm sure someone could pick you up from the nearest station if you still haven't got access to a car by then.

Regarding the mine life, while working there in 1999, there was talk of going deeper and extracting the Anhydrite and here was exploration to discover what else is deeper, with a colleague from Scotland doing a lot of research into coal measures. I don't know what happened to those projects, but should either ever go ahead it would obiously increase the minelife still further.

I think given the interest in Boulby perhaps it'd be worth setting up another trip for next year (assuming they book up that far ahead). PM on it's way Sparty - don't think it's reasonable to expect you to arrange the next trip as well!

I only live about 10 miles away and have managed to miss out on the AditNow trips and the Mine-Explorer one due to not checking the forums regulary enough (my fault I know)

So if you're going to organise one next year (or ever) can I put my name down now please ?

Yes, there will certainly be another trip organised for next year, in fact will likely start looking into it now because they book up a long time ahead.

Can you put me down for a future trip if you are taking names please? Again I live just down the road yet have never taken steps to visit.

Thanks.

Can you put my name down for this too, I never need much of an excuse to visit this place
