Still trying to find out a little more about Penarth Slate Mine, as I understand it the machinery you first come across as the surface workings are reached (if walking up from Llidiart-y-Parc) is likely the remains of a shot saw.

So my question is; what’s a shot saw?

I can find various references to their existence but would love to see some old photos or a description of how these worked.

Any ideas?

Cheers Buckhill, so that’s completely different fro how I imagined it; that’s suggesting iron shot was used instead of sand as an abrasive. Thanks!!

I can add some more information on this following our survey in 1992. The saw was manufactured by Rushowrth of Colne who incidentally also manufactured the "Red Crane" at Aberllefeni, and was installed in 1905.

Rushworth took our two patents for saws - 5353 of 1896 and 22879 of 1894.

In 1906 the manager advised that the saw was unsatisfactory however until the Hornsby-Stockport gas engine was installed in 1909 I doubt there was sufficient power on site to power the saw. The vessel for the gas engine remain buried on site with only the tops protruding above the ground.

Thanks Jon, that's really interesting. When you say survey in 1992 did this get written up anywhere?
