About to buy a new rope and the £1.05 price tag on this http://www.inglesport.com/shop/product/1005/SRT-Ropes/Mammut--Performance-Static-10mm/  is massively appealling.

Anyone have any sustained experience of it? I've only used it once and it seemed slightly wirey but it was brand new which may or may not have had some effect upon it.

Ultimately it's only going to get used on particularly big pitches so I'm not too bothered about it being perfect as it will live most of its life in the garage but I don't want to spend over £100 on something for it to turn out to be a complete pain in the behind.

Ta.

Cheap and tough but goes very stiff over time and becomes a total pain to pack and rig with...

What's the difference between this orange performance static and the normal white Mamut static?

Thought it was because it was 10mm, isn't the white 11mm and red 9mm

My opinion; 10mm is a no no for mine exploration.

If there is one area I would not try to save money on, its something I trust with my life.
I'd rather give up bloody drink.

Yes, agree with that generally. Normally stick to 10.5 or 11 on my longer lengths which cover me for the majority of everyday northern mine trips but want a 100m+ length and weight is a serious consideration. It'll mostly be used in places that are very well equipped.

Yes, it seems that way. I do seem to remember though Mammut rope had 1 row of dots for 9mm, two rows of dots for 10mm and 3 rows of dots for 11mm. Seems it still has that but now it's in funky colours too!

Well it won't weigh that much! Or we could use his 25yr old climbing rope like we did in Coniston.

used his twenty year old 100 metre rope on sunday. Watching it rubbing against an overhang where we had to skip a rebelay to reach the bottom was joyous! Partly the reason for this post i suspect...

Its even cheaper at Caving Supplies. We have always used 10 mm and used to be a big believer in Edeldrid - their Extrastatic (which I think is discontinued) is still the best on a big pitch and lasts forever, but the Edelrid Superstatic is not worth the premium over the Mammut. In use there is nothing between them and both will give 5 years use (this statement has been backed up by drop tests) with regular washing.

The only downside to the Mammut is its fu%$%ng quick the first couple of time you use it even if its been washed and dried before use. Once used a couple of times it stiffens up which is what you want for prussicking.

Cheers Jon

What I really need for prussicking I fear is to lose two stone in weight but as that's unlikely to happen any time soon...

Going to give the Mammut a shot I think; given the price differential between the other brands I can't really justify not doing so.
Having looked around a bit more the strength of the rope appears at least equal to more expensive brands if not better and the only issue appears to be suppleness which I'll just have to live with.

I totally and utterly swear by "That army black stuff" (Marlow 12mm). You can get it new/cheap if you shop around. It's only cheap as it has exceeded some arbitrary storage nonsense. I bought 220m for £70 which was bargain of the century and it has been utterly flawless. My "Old Faithful" (80m) has been used until it has the familiarity and my fondness of a best friend. It's great rope and my old 30m (of unknown age) was great until I wore through the sheath and retired it. Following that, it was still good for snatch recovery of off road vehicles, I dread to think of the peak forces involved, but it's why I don't get hysterical about old rope.

I am rather tired of dragging 12mm around and lost a bit of my humour. The other day, I ascended a fair old shaft with 140m of it in my rucksack which was pretty torturous. It made me think about alternatives, which brings me on to my mate (and supreme cheapskate) who bought "the cheapest rope he could get" which I gather was 9.5mm mammut (the gold stuff). It went through the rack like a dream and he got loads of it into his rope bag. For massive pitches with no rub points, and assuming I could get the stretch down to about 3% (I like properly static rope, rather than bungee- I figure you are more likely to get in trouble being knackered due to all that bouncing around, rather than falling and snapping your spine on mega-static).

The only thing which has given me a vague "semi" in comparison is Sterling mega-expensive mega-static. However, the price is a quick snap back to army-rope reality.

I'd ask around and see what you can get it for. My mother found 2 new spools of it (2x220m) for £100 the other day and DIDN'T BUY IT. GRRRRR!

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
