Another wonder of the internet, I can translate Welsh to English. Not that the squabble between you two makes any better sense.

But I had already managed to guess what Damia! meant.

gwych?

I have had look back into this with regard to what is in Gwynedd Archives. The spelling Maenofferen, in connection with the quarry, seems to start in the 1860's. Prior to this it was Maenyfferam. However the lease, from Lord Newborough, of 1844 (Z/DBE/3406) to Shelton & Greaves calls it Maen Fferam.

There appears to be an earlier lease in 1836 (Lord Newborough to David James and William Thomas) of land known as Ffridd Maen y fferam.

I wonder why the Company was called Maen Offeren Slate Quarry Ltd, rather than Maenofferen Slate Quarry Ltd?

I've tried to keep out of this so far, but here's my three hapeth worth... I would not place any reliance on any early documents with regard to spelling of welsh place names especially legal ones like leases written in english because more often than not they were based on what the writer (and copier) thought they had been told or heard, thus they were often an attempt at a phonetic spelling and several versions could exist. Welsh was, after all, primarily a spoken living language and the written form was not exactly standardised, throw in the mix local and regional variation of accents and you have a recipe for the confusion evident above. Basically there's no right answer...

But don't let me stop the fun. ;D

A map of 1840 shows Maen y fferm. Blaenau Ffestiniog does not seem to exist!!

"The map is the territory"

Although the Maen y Fferm shown is south of the Festiniog Railway.

Although, what I take to be Diffwys and Diphwys Quarries (as well as what later became Oakeley, Cwt y Bugail and Rhiwbach) are shown, there seems to be no sign of Maen y fferm/Maen Offeren at all.

On this 1888 map Maen y fferm seems to have changed to Maen Offeren , and just below that is Maen Offeren cottages.

Maen -offeren Quarries located on this map co-incide with the location of Slate Quarries located on the 1840 map.
