In the early 1960s I was taken around Fylingdates BMEWS by my American uncle who was a civil engineer with the USAF, some time before commissioning. (Security was quite another thing in those days).

I remember being shown around by my father in the mid '70s,
back when they were "golf balls" rather than the concrete monolith that is there today.
Sorry, nothing to do with mines, you just reminded me of a great day out! :offtopic:

Here are a couple of shots of the B31 Incline resistances when the incline was in working order in 1981. Please note the main current was locked OFF when these were taken!!! The barrels were supported on teak beams which in turn were supported on ceramic insulators. Operation of the wheels was by an extremely odd set of levers linked together from the control shaft across the incline stage.

The map is the territory - especially in chain scale.

Brilliant, I have puzzled over these contraptions in several mines and never come up with a convincing idea for what they did. Thanks everyone.
I don't like the look of that woodwork.

This is a lovely photograph of the Oakeley Ch34 Incline gear. Notice the Bruce Peebles liquid resistance controller, of the same type as those at PenyrOrsedd.
