Indeed.

Quite likely there's plenty yet to be re-discovered even in mines that are well-trodden.

It's surprising what a bit of persistence, a ladder or a rope will achieve.

Finding entire mines that are forgotten is a bit less likely; and finding your way beyond grilles is unlikely to discover much new - the grille was probably put there because people were indeed going in 😉

The other thing to remember is that everything existed before digital cameras and the interweb - just because something isn't recorded on t'web doesn't mean it's virgin territory.

In fact, exploring was proper exploring before the interweb...

Be prepared for plenty of ones that don't go very far. I've just got back from dropping a shaft I've had my eye on for a while, it went for all of 10m....

Descending a new shaft to find it full of liquid sheep is great fun! 😢

That one fortunately was free of carcasses, though some of the ones nearby have suspect black bags in them!

David Bick and George Hall covered an astonishing amount of ground in the 1950s, especially bearing in mind that there were no guide books back in their exploring days - as they wrote the first generation of guide books to Welsh mines. Close reading of GH's "Metal Mines of Southern Wales" shows that they waded up virtually every open level in the region.

In central Wales, the next explorers to extensively explore the mines of the region were North Cardiganshire Mining Club in the 1970s lead by Simon J.S.Hughes. They explored many shafts - something that Bick and Hall were not able to do.

Between them, it resulted in few central Wales mines lacking DEB / GH / NCMC / SJSH inscriptions - often far inside in difficult to access locations. Hats off to our predecessors!

Battery angle grinder. Cut at angles apposing each other, one each end of bar. That way will support part when placed back.A little grease on ends will keep in place and hide cut. I did'nt say this and do not condone such naughty adventurous behaviour.

I really have to come in on this.

If a mine is permanently grilled it means that access is denied.

To gain access one has a choice of 2 completely different methodologies.

Option 1. Ben's way, Fairly simple but not permanent and possibly leading to police action and the courts and certainly throwing mine exploration into disrepute.

Option 2 My way. Quite complicated and requiring specialist knowledge of legal matters relative to company law etc, protracted negotiations, very untimely, and possibly expensive. But permanent and with many peripheral benefits.

In a funny way its a bit like a dig. You can stick a few pieces of plywood in for support and burrow away to have it all come down on your head.
Or plan it carefully, go to the expense of good steel support work etc and you have a permanent road.
My avatar is a poor likeness.

AHH the old "lightening dig" or "siege mentality" - tread lightly or prepare for the "long haul" - personally I prefer the Audlsley method: "siege mentality" - prepare the ground and take the time to prepare the "Engine Shaft"

Classic Mendip example:

Better to regret something you have done - than to regret something you have not done.

has anybody fully explored llanberis copper mine? Apart from the open stopes above the bunk house, there is an adit to the left at bunk house levelish. There is a lot of cold air and the dead sheep have rotted away, making access a little less unpleasent.. Several of the adits were dynamited in the late fifties for safety reasons but could be cleared from the inside with a bit of effort.

theres a verticle shaft in the field behind the first row of cottages in talysarn below the old landfill site of cylgwin. It's surrounded by an old victorian iron fence and a few scrubby trees. There was a copper mine in that area once but land has been reclaimed.
And has anybody searched for the other sulphur mine near treffiw.

Do you mean Cae Coch? The sulphur mine outside Trefriw?
http://rakelane.anduin.org.uk/cal/caecoch.html

https://www.aditnow.co.uk/Mines/Cae-Coch-Sulphur-Mine_8348/

As for the old copper mine between Tal-Y-Sarn and Nantle its one of the places i've meant to look at for a long time just never got round to it, I imagine you'd want to ask someone for permission to look around those, as like you say one shaft is behind someones house!
FILTH - Think this is a playground? Think again...

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
