Another day I can't come out but beer will be drunk instead so not too disappointing for me this week.
Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it.

It's a very good hat :)

Nice little trip Thursday night; usual suspects!

Where I got the idea it would be 15 minutes walk up is anybody's guess. It was more like an hour of floundering through snow.

Worth it for the views though :)

The mine is quite small, on (as per the survey) three levels

We had a quick look in the upper level and then explored the middle level. By mutual agreement we didn't do the abseil to the bottom level. We tried to think of some plausible excuse for wimping out of it, but basically we decided it was too wet and too cold outside. Another time

The metal "thing" in the third photo is a broken off end of a cast iron sleeper for round rail. The two holes take the bent over ends of two round rails to form a "joint".

I wonder if this was obtained second hand from Penrhyn that used a lot of it in the early days. There was still quite a few lengths lying around up until the late 80s when they were buried by the ever advancing new tip.

Thanks John, that makes sense of that. I wish I'd paid a bit more attention to the rest of the rail now to see if there were any in-situ. Is this the same or similar to Thomas Hughes rail?

No, we were entirely un-adventurous. It was very wet in there and cold outside. I'd like to say this is atypical behavior for us, but I'd probably be lying

Therein is the problem, I made three and I've already forgotten what one of them was.

But yes, next time, if we see it, we'll drop it*

(within reason, I'd hate for Rockchick or Labrat to read that and assume it applies to some terrifying 700' drop they've got in mind...)
