Hi, I.m going to be up Snowden in the next week or so and am wondering if the adits to Brittania copper mine are open. Its been many years since I was last in there! thanks.

I am disappointed that no one has given you up to date info on this.

Years since I last went up but found some upper levels blocked. Others are difficult to find and require special equipment such as full wet gear and SRT.

I understand that the bottom rather obvious level has been gated.
My avatar is a poor likeness.

Both the old and new No 1 levels (the lowest ones) have been gated, but they are still accessible 😉 I failed to find the No 2 level (the next one up) when I was there in April, and I think the portal has been covered by spoil. I haven't been further up the hillside yet.

The commonly used naming of the levels is I assume based on the plan in David Bick's book, which was based on research my parents did about 50 years ago. The level numbering was based on the highly suspect plan from the short lived working in the 1870's.
Unfortunately they did not go in any detail into the surviving plans & records from the main period of working 1880's-c1916.
The correct names should be, going up on the main lode from above Glaslyn:
Level B (shown as New No. 1 almost certainly never called that) which is the one at the aerial ropeway end.
Level A (shown as No. 1) (open)
No. 1 (shown as No 2) (blocked)
No. 3 (open) & No. 4 are below the small lake
The 1911-1913 plans just show Nos 5, 6 & & above the lake, I managed to dig into at least one level probably above these (shown on DB's plan).

For underground access permission was required from the CCW office, I assume this is still the case.

See J.Neill & R.Neill 'The Copper Mines of Sowdonia', in Climbers Club Journal vol.14, no.2, 1962.

I knew your surname was naggingly familiar Alasdair!

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
