I was having a wonder through some woods near Llanddona when I chanced upon a large hole at about SH 5626 8006. It's quite a large hole, but no obvious quantity of spoil. Judging by the rocks on nearby Mynydd Llwydiarth and a geological map, it's probably excavated in schist. Anyone have any idea ?

Incidentally, whilst googling I came across a great link that downloads Volume I of Greenly's Anglesey Geological Memoir.

Not been able to find volume 2, but if someone has seen it please post.

Sorry, no idea about the hole!
Seems to be in the middle of a block area of glaucophane- schist/ blue schist which has outlying, to S.& E., Palaeozoic, intrusions of dolerite or diabase. I'm not a geologist!
Might it be nothing more than a quarry of convenience for Wern Farm?
On the other hand, Greenly, Vol. 1. is a significant find! Well done and thank you!

I appear to have a copy of 'British Regional Geology North Wales' by Bernard Smith & T. Neville George (2nd Edition) (1948).

Whilst it covers Anglesey, it's in sufficiently little detail as to be of next-to no use! 😉

Shall I scan it and upload it anyway?!

Definitely of the adit variety and not quarry. Unfortunately it was heading towards 7ish, and this time of year in a woodland that's quite dark, so I wasn't going to venture a foray inside.

Hah, having finally getting a chance to look at Mr Oldham's Caves & Mines of Anglesey book, it appears to be 'Llanddona Mine' or 'Penrallt Mine' - both with the same grid reference and marked as being for lead (Pb) - but sadly, no actual details on the workings.

Lead?!

Well, that's a new one to me... wonders never cease.

I must get my paws on Mr.Oldham's book: having grown up on Anglesey, my knowledge is embarrassing to say the least!

Well my GR is by no way definitive. I was on the return leg of a run in miserable weather conditions, together with darkening autumn skies. My reference was an estimate post-bath + cocoa after returning home.

Mind. I'm not aware of anywhere else up here having metal mines in pre-cambrian rocks.
