The last screenshot in the second set that Scooty has posted seems to have too much grass for Manod, considering it is still being worked and the pic is clearly the bottom of a quarry. I am considering that, because Blaen y cwm, Cwt y Bugail (old) and manod are within a stones throw of each other, the BBC researchers just assume that they are all part of the same working, and called it 'Manod'? The pic i refer to looks a little similar to the old Cwt y Bugail !

I have to disagree, when that was filmed (and when I later visited) there were areas like that. Some is also visible in a couple of the other shots. It was taken on the far side of the pit (looking from Manod towards Blaenau) where there were large areas of old tip that had grass growing like that. A lot of it was buried when they started reworking the Graig Ddu pit on a larger scale not that long after first I visited.

A quick dig about doesn't give any links to where Owen Gywn Williams is today, if he is still even alive sadly. 😞 Has Emyr written about Manod Quarry then?

Yeah, Emyr is the guy who wrote the booklet that was sold on the public open day in Sept '83. I have scanned a copy which can be seen on the Manod page

Talking of long shots, is this Emyr Williams the same one as you mentioned?

I also disagree - for three reasons -

Watch the sequence and you can see the cyber-massacre all took place in the same location. There is much of it in the second Youtube link I posted last night (all at Manod, with the Raston Warrior Robot skilfully replaced by a rabbit).

The structure that looks a bit like the remains of a drumhouse behind Liz Sladen in the earlier picture can (I think) be seen in the background of that picture.

Finally, sheer practicability, I am not aware of any easy access to Cwt-Y-Bugail that the crew, actors and all their equipment could take. Even if there was, that would be a helln of a lot of effort for one shot.

The second photo was taken at the pit at Bwlch Slaters (Manod). The adit has now disapeared since the mid nineties as the place has been worked down and outward, but I remember going there with a friend who is a Dr Who fanatic and he was telling me about the episode taken there.
I have some old photos of the pit in the attic, and I will have a look. I have a 1980 photo of the top of the pit in one of the files on my computer. When I find it I will post on A.N.
As for access to the quarry, beware as the farmer that lives opposite the track takes the reg numbers of cars going up to the mine and gives it to the mine operator.

I've just got off the phone with Emyr Williams (its amazing what you can find on the internet), sadly he wasn't aware that they had even filmed Doctor Who at the site, but he did tell me that the owners during the 80's are very much alive and still living locally, now how do I track them down?

Isn't that a public road 😉

It is a public road, but much of the surrounding land belongs to that particilar farm. And have the grazing around the mine. They have about 1,800 sheep up there. A lot of roast lamb dinners.

Just a note to say I've edited the post containing the former owner of Manod, Mr Owen Glyn Williams. As a private individual he may not want his address and phone number on the web.

I have uploaded a photo featuring some of the pit in 1980. Where the Dr Who was filmed by the adit in the pit and was to the bottom right rock face. But you cannot see it.

I have many old photos of Bwlch in the 1980's, but they are mostly of machinery and not of the rock face etc.

There was a question I asked on this thread a few days ago but probably got lost amongst the chatter.

Was Manod used later in the 80s for filming of Edge of Darkness?

Yes indeed!

I believe the brick storage buildings are visible in one of the shots?

Indeed it was, and Mr V is correct, if you look at the 1980s open day photos on http://www.penmorfa.com/Rhiwbach/manod3.html  one of those buildings definitely appeared in Edge of Darkness. An external view of the building just before Jedburgh and Craven went in for their bizarre lunch.

And the sequence of the Land Rovers whizzing up the hillside was the public road up to the quarry.

Anybody know where the surface sequences where they were hiding in a gorge while a small battery loco went past on a bridge were filmed?

Apparently Gwynfynydd was used for the tunnel sequences at the start of their underground trip into Northmoor.

Wiki mentions Clogau Gold Mine as a location, could it be the bridge outside the lower adit? I haven't seen the programme myself.

It could well be. I'll have to dig the DVD out 🙂

Well, if you like good drama, it is a must. Being remade in Hollywood at the moment - probably will be carp.

I seem to have a recollection of the series. Was some of it filmed at the Trawsfynydd nuke power station? With a scene with a lot of pipes all around? It must be in the late 1980's?
if anyone has a dvd version of the series, I would be interested in buying a copy.
