I remember a workmate, now retired, telling me how he once sheltered in an old building somewhere above Penmachno, glanced upwards and saw an intricate image of a Penny Farthing carved into one of the beams. I've just asked him if this bicycle photographed by Mr Bird was what he saw.

He replied "I think it must be this one but when I saw it we were inside a partly ruined building with the timbers still in place and there was also a carving of a penny farthing cycle and I seem to vaguely remember a mention of a cycling club."

Can anyone throw any light on this?

Thanks.

If you have a look in David Bick's book The Old Copper Mines of Snowdonia" page 102, he says..." East of the mine (Newborough) the ruinous Cwt Y Bugail slate dressing sheds are worth a mention. The massive timber trusses display many names of quarry workers, and a fine carving of a bicycle with North Road handlebars and a saddle bag, dated March 1903".

Well, Roy, at this distance in time, and having regard to the state of my aged neurons, I think it was probably towards the far end of the ruinous building. If you pull up the general view of the dressing sheds in that mini series, and look at the area where there are two Birdlets and Mr McCurdy walking about. Think it was around there. Mind you, probably the whole thing has now suffered a complete collapse since then.:(

Thanks Mr Bird 🙂 I have that book by Bick so will dig it out this evening. That does rather imply that there was just the one bicycle there though, so I wonder if the Penny Farthing was somewhere else in the vicinity?
