A rather naff photo of the Cwt y Bugail remains at the Great Dorset Stem Fair.

All the platework was heavily corroded, I cannot think of any piece of metal in the boiler or firebox which would not have to be replaced to make this boiler useable.

The cylinder block and reversing lever stand, along with the hinge for the smokebox door were the only other fittings surviving. None of these were in good condition, and could easily be made from scratch if a replica were to be made.

Overall, I feel that the removal of the Aveling was not justified, and if the remains are butchered just for a slither of metal to weld into a replica boiler just so it can keep the original identity, it will be a very great shame for a unique survivor which demonstrates the resourcefullness and re-use in a struggling slate quarry.

Yes it was a nice supprise when we stumbled upon it, weren't sure if it was a portable or early traction engine, started to dig round the front to find the steering pivot but hands and boots were'nt good enough, came back a few weeks later armed with folding shovels and the only trace were two large tire track heading off north.
Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it.
