Hi,

I found Nant Gadwen mine a few weeks ago by accident and so wasn't prepared with any lights or equipment to go into the many open adits that exist for an explore  .
I was just wondering if there was much to see - making it somewhere worth going back to - or if falls close to adit enterances etc make it a bit of a timewaster.
I got some pictures of the surface remains which I'll post up next week sometime, it looks like one of the dumps has been worked within the last 20 years or so even though the mine must have been long closed by then?
Thanks

Diolch,

I'm in Australia at the moment but will go and have a look when I get back in a week and let you know if there's much to see - it looks like there are 4/5 open adits so I'm hopeful there'll be something there...

Totally unconnected, so apologies, but I got a piece of targeted spam today asking if I could supply 20,000 tonnes of manganese to a Chinese manufacturing company... Unfortunately I can't

Hey! This is an interesting mine. I remember last time I was in here, I headed to a sort of chamber, connected to the main chamber above it. The lower one was largely filled with water though at the end there appear to be some roping and a continuation of the level, anyone been here?

I always assumed that end joined up with the open chamber with the rubbish dumped in it and the big fence across the front, but accessible from the other adit. It's been a long time since I climbed down into that one, but think I remember it being flooded off to the right.
You can see how close they are here:

See the large open chamber/pit? The adit leading to Vanoord's photo is at the bend to the right and lower down.

Thanks. I can see how it might be connected to the open work, the mine itself is actually quite compact, as far as I remember there are three adits, each leading to the main chamber, the uppermost adit is fairly narrow but connects with the top of this chamber. Next time I will investigate with a boat, or just swim. I read on the webpage that a lot of ore was obtained via the incline so do you think the flooded incline lead to anything extensive? Could be a potential dive site, or perhaps someone already has!

If this weren't such a long way down the Lleyn it would be a good one for a Thursday night?

Definitely. There's a good book about the Rhiw mines called "The Llyn Peninsula Mines" that explains how it was all drained in the thirties (I think) to survey the potential for further mining. I'll dig out my copy and post some more details.

Thursday night trip? For some of us it's not much further than Blaenau, etc. And it'd be easy to launch a small boat to check on that flooded end. As this photo shows, there's what looks to be a passage leading onwards.

Oh I think you can get there in about 50-60 minutes from Bangor, about the same time it takes to get to blaenau.

If it doesn't go anywhere special, well there are other mines nearby and the location is quite special, good just to be out in nice weather on the Lleyn

For a good day out Take food & drink.
Pick a time when the tide is low.
Walk down the valley examining the remains on both sides of the stream, go underground if you want.
Find the head of the incline down to the sea and try to picture the pier that existed here.
Walk (scramble, fall) down the incline to the rocks below.
Rocks are now the size of houses! go right onto the beach, chill out and enjoy. Then climb the wooden steps back up to the valley.

Been climbing down inclines all week and haven't fallen yet! Tommorow might be a first...

Do the workings on the west side of the valley go anywhere? I seem to remember an adit or two! Would be good for an afternoon/evening explore

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
