This is an air reciever for the two stage piston type air compressor at Dinorwig slate quarry. And not a boiler as stated. But I must say it does look like a boiler or a victorian submarine,

In the absence of Simonrl, where is this?

I bought the Dinorwig book a couple of weeks back - which is fascinating - but it's a little bit short on technical information, even to the extent that it names a lot of workings, levels etc. but doesn't appear to have any form of map or other guide to where things are.

Just in case anyone hasn't noticed the photo competition, Dinorwig would be an eminently suitable location to use... thankfully, as Simonrl is not allowed to enter, everyone's safe from his pics 😉
Hello again darkness, my old friend...

If I remember correcrly it is located in the 'compressor house' on the same level as the upper mill. There are the remains of two electric driven compressors. One which is a horizontal twin cylinder with its own air reciever which is this one. And also in the same biulding there is a horizontal type compressor with the remains of an electric motor. This also has its own reciever. You will also see remains of an electric transformer at the end of the shed. Above the biulding in another level there is a large rusty metal tank which held the cooling water for these units. Metal air pipes were directed out of the shed in order to feed different workings at a working preassure of 80 to 100 psi. There are several other compressors located at different levels on the whole site.

Thanks for that hymac580c, I've corrected the caption now and added a description along the lines of your description.

Any other errors you (or anybody) spots, please do say and I'll correct asap :)

Oh, and yes, it's in the building at the upper mill level, specifically the left hand end of this building http://www.aditnow.co.uk/photo/Dinorwig-31-03-2007-to-01-04-2007-Image-048/

Dinorwig is such a Brilliant site to explore. What fascinated me was the fact that all these machinery have been left as the were and not scrapped. Well not completely anyway Something different to see on all levels, and plenty of places to shelter from the rain. And a fantastic view of Snowdon on a fine day. I often wonder what was the worst in the old days, working on the rock face in torrential rain and wind or sleet. Or working underground with a candle in the dust and or damp.
Your black snd white photos of Dinorwig gives it an interesting atmosfere.
All the best

I certainly know what you mean.

Idle curiousity time... in that building where the air receiver lives is the large air compressor.

(caption is probably wrong on this one as well I'm afraid...)

It says on it 'Ingersoll Rand New York'.
I've always wondered at that, whether it was made in New York or whether simply Ingersoll Rand were based in New York.

Quite a feat if it really was cast in New York, shipped across the Atlantic and hauled up to the upper mill level... anybody know?

Thanks for that!

Glad I didn't have the job of carrying the castings up the hill 😮

That's why someone invented the incline! 😉 😉
