Hi all,

I mentioned my query in another post in the Midlands group but thought it might receive more attention here as it is the appropriate geographical loco.

My question is, are there any mines in the Forest of Dean I can just "rock up to" and explore? I visited the Bailey Level Gold Mine earlier this month only to find it locked.

Does anyone know any good places that can be freely explored in the area? In my other post I mention I am going to the peak district national park this weekend. If anyone here knows any places of the same availability but in that location that would be super useful too. Aside, any other tips for a complete noob are also appreciated :)

Many thanks,
Alex

Judging by your 3 posts you seem to be looking all over the country.
Anyway most if not all of the mines in the Forest are on Forestry Commission land and you must have BCA insurance and permission from FODCCAG if you're not a member of Gloucester Speleological Society, RFDCC or Hades. That's the access agreement negotiated by FODCCAG. Other mines are on private land and have separate access agreements I'm afraid.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
