Box crab winch

Just been looking threw my photos of the winch from a long time ago , I have never really thought of how it exactly worked and it’s purpose I am guessing it was used to pull rocks into the reach of the cranes ? Also it would have to of been attached to a train of some sort so it didn’t pull the cart over it’s positioned on ? If anyone knows would be very great full many thanks

I always thought of it as a sort of portable crane raising blocks onto a truck by a pulley set into the roof?

Hooks in the roof in various places would be the clue.

Interesting one Roy, I'd always invisiged it the other way round: that the crab winch hauled the blocks out of the heading for the cranes to load into the waggons. Don't forget that the cranes were also mobile and could be moved from drive to drive.

Same thought, only methodology that matches with the winch itself, given having *two* chains, facing in opposite directions... First chain hooked into those various strange cut slots to be found in the walls, and tightened, this provides the tension and taking of strain. Second chain and hook applied to block needing pulling, and then the winding started, to drag it out..

Hey presto! Block positioned where crane can pick it up and lift on to wagon for hauling out

I see so it’s possible the hammered in them strange shape holes in the wall for example ( a steel pin with a eyelit on the end used it as a ground anchor point then winched oposit way ?

What was the actual size of the blocks they removed I no you had a light weight crane and a heavy weight inside I found a lovely worked area in the northern section that indicates roughly 4ft by 3ft at least can’t remember could of been larger

The "strange shape holes" are for Lewis Pin sets, a series of 3 tapers that will lock under load and act as an anchor
