i was wondering if anyone has any info about the redruth mines any old maps with the sites of shafts they could post up ,it appears there are two shafts under the recently demolished old ambulance station.. any info on penandrea and wheal union as well as east carn brea would be of interest to me , i have found a shaft in trengweath thats collapsing this im sure is to do with the workings that caused the embankment to collapse, indeed the road bridge south of the viaduct shows signs of movement and is no more than 20 yards from what im sure is a shaft collar collapsing, anyway im pushed to find even an old map let alone much info apart from whats in cornwall central mines ,am i rite that by the entrance to fairfiled behind the tramstop is an engine house converted? it sure looks like an engine house to me theres a sweb substation where u mite expect a shaft to be, also has there ever been any diamond drilling done under redruth? ,it strikes me from the general geology that maybe under redruth at depths there could well be unkown lodes like in pool that dont outcrop but are far within the granite and far below the old copper workings , it seems to me if stuff could be proven to exist wheal uny could prove to be a very good spot to look (beyond what they left and is well known about ) with granite all round and how things are id be amazed if riches like crofty and dolcoath etc didnt lay this end of the mineralization .

I have a map of Ped-nan-drea, too large to upload on here, but if you promise to return it you can have it copied.
I have also wondered about the building at the back of the tram stop for many years. It's one of those things that I've meant to find out more about but never got around to it.

Are you familiar with "Flashearth"? If you aren't:-

1. Go to www.flashearth.com, click "Explore the earth"

2. Put the "+" on the site you are interested in

3. Click "permanent link" on the menu on the left.

4. Copy the link like this one:-

http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=50.235064&lon=-5.164144&z=18.6&r=0&src=msl

Whack me up a few links with a short description and I'll see if I can come up with anything.

that sounds great and what im looking for we shall have to arrange a meeting .anyway i doubt we shall see any activity at uny but when ever it does become of interest id be willing to bet redruth could be equal to the mines to the east yet its virtually virgin ground ,nothin here has approached the necessary depth, i see no reason why that run of mineralization dosent exist utterly untouched, that uny would be the place to look and if found work it from there ,it could be a trick missed rite where its thought mostly worked out there is all this ground east never worked deep there could be a mine like crofty in the waiting, im not talking about tolgus area the theory around that and the tolgus tunnel failure or its misplacing and its insufficient depth, but directly between can brea and carn marth whether there are the swarms of veins nowhere near surface like west.

Paul, Does it by any chance show the shaft that went away next to the bungalow (Monavean) on the St.Day road a few years back. I believe it was called Rowe's Shaft.
The one's under the ambulance hall and that area, Wasn't that the Naked Sword bounds section? All pretty ancient stuff anyway. It's an area that has fascinated me for a very long time and the vicinity including Wh.Dopps and Gweal an Top.

Trounson said that the bit left in Uny should be worked in conjunction with West Grenville (where there is another bit of the GFL which has not been mined)

I've seen most of the plans but not those, they look like they were based on the MRO ones. Out of a book?

I've seen a very old plan, possibly even late 18th cent which shows a lot of the odd redruth stuff (Wheal Silver, etc).

aye i suspected as much its a bit distant from their workings tho ( 2 .5mile incline? lol )hmm no better to set up on the site i would think id love to see that my feeling is there is more even than whats known about in this area.it just needs investment and really thinking ambitiously , things are not at that level tho,can companies with big pockets think on modest scales for the sake of production(at some point they are gonna have to learn cos big scale easy stuffs a thing of the past) , they prefer large low grade stuff where they can calculate a definite return , but the thing is nothin ventured nothin gained,(crofty could have died long ago if it hadnt been for persistence when all looked grim, they found and had another 100 years when every one else gave up and even in that time its now known so much is there they are far from depletion ) still non of it would ever have happened without persistence that kinda spirit has little chance in this modern world of accountants ,it seems thats why we are not seeing that much activity considering the price is economic for our style of workings.no ones poking their noses in any old workings are they ,just maybe open cast low grade again ( but that's not where most our minerals are is it so they are not thinking to get at the majority of it) , things are not like they were in the 70's with various bods poking around old holes, they should be tho with prices very strong , big companies need to think smaller and profitable but can they ?when they can then we mite see our hopes realised .

Yes, Stuey, those plans are from an article in The Mining & Smelting Magazine (September 1862). I've just uploaded the complete article.

been up pednandrea again today ,if i was living anywhere near those two shafts that where under the ambulance hall id be pretty worried because the whole of that ground is moving, even in a week massive cracks have appeared in the wall surrounding the site, if u look by the electric box that supplied the hall the walls dropping down into what is surly a void of some kind ,these are all fresh movements since the building was pulled down and the shafts capped over ,it looks serious to my eyes, i seen a few sinking bits in my time but thats the worst iv seen. i think ill ring the council cos its really bad by the pavement that folks walk on, at a guess the whole hanging walls going even round the plugs its showing signs of movement (the caps are only shallowly covered so its not just settlement) it needs investigating, it really is looking like a major collapse is imminent , the cracks are inches wide the walls falling from below leaving the unmoved bits and said cracks .

In an idle moment I followed the line of the open shafts North West on the photo and it looks as if there are remains of 2 shafts at 50dg 14' 11.2" Lat - 5dg 10' 11.7" Long and at 50dg 14' 14.2" Lat - 5dh 10' 21.3" Long.

This sounds interesting.

Were the shafts capped very recently?

It looks about right for the outcrop of Skimmers lode.

There's a lot of holes around them parts.
Going down the valley towards Twelveheads they used to be an open stope or something set in the bank just to the Northern side of the track as it was back then, anyone know what that was and if it's still there?

Was that next to an old cottage at Hale Mills (where the valley splits to go to either Poldice or Carharrack.) If it is, then Hammy Jenks has it down as Wheal Pickas bounds. It's marked as a well on the map but is a short trial. OR might you mean the open pit down below Wheal Henry?
I lived in Bissoe before moving to Twelveheads so know the area pretty well.

Hello Roy, I am sure it was on the Poldice track somewhere between where the valley splits and the tailings dam, heading west up that track it was on the right hand side, it looked like an open stope, I used to drive past it on the way to South Crofty when I worked there back in the early 70's I was living just down from Crosslanes then just up the road from Twelveheads.

I was really only going on instinct as I have no personal knowledge of the area. They are pretty much in line and close enough to be part of the same or adjacent sett.

I went and had a look at the ambulance place earlier. I think the subsidence behind the electric box is old and god knows what the dip in the middle is. If they made it, that's fine, if they didn't then !!!!!!! 😮

Hello. I know it’s a pretty old topic, but I hope some of you is still there.

I am looking for a map of Pedn-an-drea as I’m trying to buy a house not too distant from it and just next Victoria Park.
I have of course arranged appropriate survey and inspection but I’m a but more curious than that and I’d like to see more in details what’s under and around there.

Thanks to anyone that would help!
