I have just banged on a few Dolcoath Pictures I took in 1998 and 1999, these are the days before the site was conserved. I am always amazed how little of this mine survived considering it was the Queen of the Cornish Mines.

yes there isn't much left but the sett was taken over by S. Crofty in the 1930s and the latter dominated after that. But as you rightly say from the 1850s onwards it was the Queen. I'm still amazed when I think it got down to over 3000ft.
As you know there many important mines stretching from Dolcoath eastwards to Redruth but in recent years this area has become heavily industrialized so much of the mining heritage has vanished. It explains why the mines around Carnkie anf Piece have the best preservation of above ground workings. In fact they are reverting back to nature. Below a very poor photo of the man engine at Dolcoath probably around 1890. Probably good enough for you to get the drift.

It is tragic what has been lost..... even though I am from Derbyshire I love the SW region (particularly Cornwall) for its amazing mine history. I have the pic you sent in one of my books on the area of which I have loads, the man engine is a wonderful thing indeed. I like the history and mining technology and have done a lot of walking in the region 6-10 years ago. I get back as much as I can and enjoy seeing what is left.
I like this site and will be posting many of my Cornish pictures for a good deal of the mines.
have you had a look at Stray Park..... they have done a reasonably good job compared to the eyesore it was 10 years ago.... at least its safe... considering its one of the older Camborne mine sites.

Not recently. The Great Flat Lode Trail-the Dolcoath Mine walk ends at Stray Park. It's not a million miles from where I live. Must get round to it. Of course Dolcoath isn't actually on the GFL. The man engine was cetainly better than climbing hundreds of feet of ladders which contributed to many premature deaths. I remember reading in one report that an 8 year old boy had to cling to his father's back being to weak to ascend. Unfortunatey they weren't univerally installed.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
