This page http://www.midnight-computing.com/Midnight/personal/Dan/Mining/penzance.htm  suggests that might be Ding Dong mine.

Not my area though; so don't know if it's correct.
my orders are to sit here and watch the world go by

Yep. Pretty sure that is correct. 🙂

I've always assumed that this was Ding Dong, but when I was there (again) last month, a local (who's family were local miners) said it was a misapprehension. He pointed out an engine house further west towards Boskednan. His explaination seemed to be that the engine house that we were at is very visible (in fact used by shipping as a landmark) and was near enough as made any odds to Ding Dong, it became referred to as such. Anyone know if thhis is right?

Not my area and I would think difficult to prove. There does seem to be some inconsistency about the co-ordinates and of course it is quite high up on the moors,189m, so use as landmark would seem quite plausible. There a very good full page aerial phot in allen Buckley's "The Historyof Cornish Mining" showing the engine house at Greenbarrow Shaft in the foreground. As a last resort one could always consult Higher Authority as Jesus was reported as having paid a visit. 😉
Definately the original mine becauase you can se the medieval workings.

I can clarify the co-ordinates. Just had a look the definitive book "Cornish Mines" published by the Universty of Exeter and the Northern Mining Research Society. It's the seventh volume in a continuing series of The Mineral Statistics of the UK 1845-1913. The addition of new locational information in the form of OS GR makes the book the most comprehensive field guide to the substantial surface and underground remains of the county.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
