When living in Kent not long ago, I failed to visit many workings. I know there is a gypsum mine somewhere is sussex, Various chalk and flint workings just south of London and some Sandstone mines in Surry; besides a few flooded coal mines near dover. Annoyingly, most of the sandstone mines are closed off, the coal ones flooded up to about 3000ft, and the meat of the chalk and flint into a tourist attraction at chisselhurst.
Anyone any idea if there are any worth looking at, open or not?? 😉

There are some small sand mines in Reigate and Godstone.

But more interestingly there are about half a dozen firestone quarries in north Surrey, totalling about 15 miles of underground workings - all accessible although gated.

Contact the Wealden Cave and Mine Society for more information, we're always happy to arrange trips for anyone genuinely interested.
