The Shropshire lead mines produced a fair amount of decent quartz crystals, together with galena, sphalerite, calcite and pyrite cubes. Primrose hill had epidote and garnet.
Wainlode cliff, on the Severn in Gloucs, has decent pyrite up to oxo cube size, micaceous haematite in the Dean iron mines.
The quarry at Turners Hill used to have good garnets, galena and amethyst.
The pebble beds around the Lickey Hills and quarry have had some excellent agates.
Cauldon Low quarry in Staffs used to produce marcasite and haematite.
There's a vast number of minerals from Derbyshire.
pm me if you need any more info.

Gentlemen, it seems the "M" word is appearing again, I think we all have a sort of mutual agreement to keep certain subjects of this site?

One time explanation :smartass:
Many mines and caves have suffered in the past from damage (allegedly) caused by mineral collectors. :curse:

This is why some of the replies are a bit sharp.

My apologies all for responding to this. I wasn't aware that the M subject was taboo. Let me just say, as both a fanatical mine researcher, and a M collector, I have never damaged anything, and never would. I only ever collected from waste dumps and never dug. My priority these days is purely mining research.

I stand truly chastised.

No problem, don't let it put you off asking questions.
You could have done something really bad like asking on UK Caving about gates on caves!
Going to take my medication now.

royfellows

and I should have said that there are actually several taboo subjects and caving is one of them!

and if you must mention the word "cave", its best to write it as "c*ve" or you could try "c@ve", sometimes just !!!!

This way you can get past the filters

C*ving is about getting cold, wet and dirty in natural places underground. (makes no sense!)

Mine exploration is about getting cold, wet and dirty in man made places underground (which is very sensible )

Simple isn't it.

Its always best not to let too many know what you're up too and just keep a low profile. There's just too many nosey people around where the sparklies are concerned. 🙂

Are you in a "coal de sac" or does it come "a la carte"?
