Were the pumping shafts at Barbot Hall and Parkgate (also known at different periods as Fitzwilliam and Westfield) associated with a particular colliery or for general area drainage?

There are a number of air shafts shown on old and current OS maps in a line between the two - were they related to the pumping operations?

Barbot Hall is an old pumping borehole sunk to the Thorncliffe Seam, it is not on the drainage sough network.

The drainage network around the area is a bit complex and from memory includes the Thorncliffe/Elsecar Water Drift (Sellars Sough) system, the Westfield Old Sough System, Hemmingfield Water Level system. On top of this are a load of old drainage adits. I did once start to plot these on to a map, not sure how far I got. I have also got a copy of a report done in early 90's about the Fitzwilliam drainage network etc.

There is a line of air shafts running from near Westfield down to the junction of Scrooby Lane and Cinder Bridge Road - this is Mangham Sough. There is also a second line of air shafts which runs from Westfield to the river at Parkgate - I am not sure if this is a mine water culvert of old water level from Westfield Pit
I went in a mine once.... it was dark and scary..... full of weirdos

When do I get my soapbox, I need to rant on about some b***cks

Thanks for that - the drainage system appears very complex. I have also found map references to a Munsbrough Old Engine and Lower Engine 1.2km west of Barbot Hall. The former was already called "old" on the mid 1850's OS maps, so it must have been an early drainage site and predating the nearest Colliery (Greasbrough, formerly Sellars' Pit sunk 1850s) a little way to the west. The sites are now under modern housing but were shown as extant on the 1957 OS map, (though not necessarily still pumping).
