Anyone any idea of the possible depths of shafts in the area?

A lot deeper than the 2.4m visible at the surface I guess.

I don't think the seams around there lie particularly deep but I wouldn't swear to that. ICLOK may be able to give more info.

Okee dokee... it appears thats some seams outcropped and were worked in early day by drift but some of the early collieries in the Newhall area were probably working quite shallow stuff maybe even at 15-40 odd yards in depth. Mines in the area from the mid 1800s such as (Colly name in bold)-

Newhall Park
Lether seam 90yds deep
Uureka Seam 144yds deep
Stanhope 171yds deep

Swadlincote
Eureka 284 yds deep
Woodfield 207 yds deep
Stockings 264 yds deep

Coton Park and Linton area-
Moira Main
Main 197 yds

Granville
Block 132yds
Little 226yds
Main 290yds
Woodfield 322yds
Eureka 357yds

Cadley Hill
Little 40yds
Main 106yds
Woodfield 155yds
Stockings 169yds
Eureka 205yds
Stanhope 232yds

Church Gresley
Little 210yds

Stanton
Main 115yds
Woodfield 177yds
Eureka 215yds
Little 115yds

Mines depths towards and in Leic's typically could be from as little as 50yds and were recorded as 63yds at Swannington.

Hope that gives you an overview of these typical seams/mine depths for the area

Thanks for that :flowers: - it could be a shaft onto a shallow seam, or fill settling in a deeper shaft. I see from one of the local papers the CA are sending a team round to fettle it!
