Just looking at the pics from the latest visit to mandale by iclok.

[photo]Mandale-Mine-Visit-Image-48965[/photo]

Have they been clearing some of the trees and vegetation along the valley? Some of the features are generally hidden in the undergrowth.

From memory, if you walk along the leat there are some wooden sections along the edge of the leat path. But they were only just visible
I went in a mine once.... it was dark and scary..... full of weirdos

Hi Lee, They appear to have given the whole valley a good makeover.. The paths are better and the undergrowth has been hacked back. Last time I visited I only took 10 pictures as the whole place was terribly overgrown. Its very nice now and the Batemans house bit very good indeed... Def recommend a re-visit to anyone who has not been for a while 🙂 The tame Robin made my day though.. he was bold as brass and was less than 2 feet away, watching my sandwiches with intent!!!
Hope you well,

I only went a few months ago and it was fairly overgrown everywhere. And I've still not seen where Lathkilldale Sough is meant to end.

Also noticed Mandale Sough was discharging water again, I haven't seen it do that since 2007

I have also noticed that one of the notice boards at Bateman's House is back up.

Was the light which lights up the sough under the house working? Last time I was there the handle was missing and time before that it wasn't working.

Excellent... I once got mugged by two wonderful Squirrels at Pershore Abbey!! One worked its way across the wall where I was sitting from the left keeping me occupied, whilst one from the right stole my Cornish pasty crusts... When I turned round to shooo him off the other one nicked the rest!! 😮

Lee, I couldn't find Lathkill Sough tail either, Yes the handle is back at Bateman's and works wonderfully well as do the lights. The notice board cover did look new.
Also the route of the leat is now completely clear to the arch above the wheelpit site.

The sough tail doesn't really appear. The water finds it's way out at the natural weir feature below the end of the garden of Lathkill Lodge. It is a cut-and-cover section there and through the lodge garden. The hand pump in the garden flower beds is on the final access shaft but doesn't give any access, too silted up. The next shaft is not till way up in the woods on the opposite side of the river and that too is blocked before getting deep enough.
Bateman's House shaft is the only way in.

Cheers for clearing that up, I did wonder.

Thanks for clearing that up, I was aware that the tail wasn't accessible or visible, I was under the impression that it was evident as a spring into the river.

I do remember having a look at the garden and I remember thinking it must go under it. I have a vague recollection of a raised flower bed feature which look suspicious but I may be getting this mixed up with somethine entirely different

Nope, that sounds very much like my thoughts on the place too! 🙂

As I remember, they are (were?) stone or brick edged raised beds in a pattern with pathways in between. The pump was a typical village green looking thing in the centre of all the beds.
I have not walked downstream of the lodge for quite a while so I don't know if it is still the same.
We had permission to examine and explore, if possible, the shaft way back during the 1976 dry spell when a lot of the downstream sough from Bateman's house was also accessible.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
