As I remember, they are (were?) stone or brick edged raised beds in a pattern with pathways in between. The pump was a typical village green looking thing in the centre of all the beds.
I have not walked downstream of the lodge for quite a while so I don't know if it is still the same.
We had permission to examine and explore, if possible, the shaft way back during the 1976 dry spell when a lot of the downstream sough from Bateman's house was also accessible.
