Is it possible to visit the gold mine at Dolgellau in N.Wales and have a go at panning, if so how do we get in touch with the relevant person ?
I have a party of people interested in a day out at the mine but cannot find a contact.
Any ideas are very gratefully accepted

Depending on what gold mine you are talking about?

There is no access to any of the large gold mines, and panning for gold is a tad illegal!

Some of the smaller gold mines are open but generally flooded to a degree.

Ypu always see people panning in the Mawddach though! 😉

Yes, I think that even though it is illegal it is largely tolerated around here.

There is a mine near Dolgellau called Gwynfynydd and we thought it may be open to the public but we cannot contact anyone to ask ?

It used to be open to the public, but that stopped quite a few years ago. Mining has also now ceased, and the mine sealed.

So are there no mines open to the public where we can pan for gold ?

Is it specifically the gold panning you're looking for or a mine where you can visit the underground workings? Might help people suggest a location where you can legitimately pan.

You're right that Gwynfynydd used to be open to the public, and used to offer panning, but as Simply has said it's no longer, the visitor centre has been closed a while now.

It was an idea we had to visit somewhere to have a go at panning for gold for an afternoon and then visit a local hostelry for a few beers in the evening.
If anyone can help with the panning side of things then I'm sure the beers will look after themselves ! :happybday:

There doesn't seem to be a great deal of information about gold panning days on tinternet, and what there is seems to be organised days out, but two links I found:

I know of a reeely good area to go gold panning:

Walhalla in the South Victorian Goldfields, however getting there might be a tad expensive for a weekend's fun tho.

Yeah, fly from Manchester Friday evening, travel to goldmine, pan for a few hours, make a fortune, fly home Sunday a millionnaire !
Sounds OK to me, thanks.

Not north Wales, but a bit closer to there, Dolaucothi Gold Mine http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-findaplace/w-dolaucothigoldmines.htm  provides gold panning facilities:

Or, you could come to Geevor and pan for pyrite - not really anything wonderful but we could do you an in depth investigation of the local drinking facilities afterwards!

Bill, Geevor sounds my kind of place wherever it is, let's forget the panning and get straight on with the beer sampling !

Oh i forgot it is supposed to be a day out for the family as well
as enjoying the night life.

What about Wanlockhead? When the museum is open (Easter onwards) you can purchase a permit by the day, week, or whatever, at fairly modest cost. They also have pans, instructions, etc.

No more than 3 or 4 hours drive from Manchester, but it might be better to stay overnight. Google will find you some accommodation.

There is the museum, mine (a bit simplistic for most people here), miner's library and cottage to see, as well as lots of surface artifacts, and a narrow gauge railway at nearby Leadhills, plus the highest golf course in the country. Oh, and the food in the museum cafe is very nice.

Yes Wanlockhead looks good although getting 15 people there may be a problem from Yorkshire but I will check it out thanks for the info
