I guess a letter to the local MP should be along the lines of:
"As constituency MP for Amber Valley, you should be aware that a historic major employer in the Amber Valley area, Butterley Engineering, went into administration in March 2009.
The site occupied by the company has a long history dating back to the formation of the Butterley Company in 1790 and still includes many unique and historic buildings and features. These include the original blast furnace from 1790, the stone built machine shops (with many notable architectural features), bath house and offices and the octagonal gatekeepers office (itself a grade 1 listed building).
The blast furnace is sited over the Butterley Tunnel of the Cromford Canal, where there is an underground wharf and various shafts and tunnels leading from the works down to the canal. The Friends of Cromford Canal are planning preservation of this section of canal and tunnel. The site is a unique and historic asset for Ripley, Amber Valley and England generally.
In November and December 2009 demolition of the works commenced, which to date has include demolition of the fabrication shops, cranes, post-war buildings and associated steelworks. The exact fate of the historic blast furnace and stone buildings is unclear, however, it is rumoured that the developers plan to demolish all buildings in the site and to bury the blast furnace prior to constructing houses on the site.
A number of local residents and people across the UK with an interest in industrial archeology are very concerned that these unique assets to the area would be lost forever if this were to happen.
I am requesting that you ensure that English Heritage and Amber Valley Council have followed appropriate procedures to ensure:
* That these historic assets are suitably protected until a full investigation of their significance can be made.
* This investigation should include assessment of the underground tunnels and shafts beneath the site which will influence future plans for the site.
* That any decisions on the future of these assets should be made in a clear, open and unbiased manner.
* That appropriate plans for their long term preservation can be made to retain these features as assets for the area.
As demolition work is currently under way, time is of the essence to ensure that, as a minimum no further demolition work is undertaken until the above actions are completed.
I await your support to ensure that due process to assess and protect these unique assets is followed.
Yours ......"
Any suggestions for improvements or changes?
