I read that post a bit too quickly! I read it as "How does one get a kinky thing?"

There are two ways to do it.

I do it this way:-

When you compose a post copy and paste the complete address (complete with the http bit://) then select the address by highlighting it with mouse. Then press the small [URL] button at top of the message.

I believe you can also do it by:-

Press the [URL] button then type in or copy/paste the whole address (complete with the http bit://) then press the [URL] button again.

Sorry I've not yet been able to send off the promised letters, one to English Heritage and two to Amber Valley Borough Council, this was due to a Menieres attack and I've had to keep off the p.c. However, I promise I will rejoin the fray immediately the Christmas festivities are over and before New Year, to help try and save the important stone buildings that are within the curtilage of the two Listed Grade 2 buildings on site, and to try and get officials from English Heritage, on site, in person, to view the Furnace Bank for them to recommend it for either scheduling or listing. The more of us that join in the fray the better.

Thanks for letting us know the date of the article in the Derby Evening Telegraph, I will ask my neice to cut it out and post it to me.

Incidently did anyone phone the reporter up at the Ripley and Heanor News to point out the very bad mistake he made in his article, when he mentioned a current planning application for land at Butterley Hill which had nothing to do with the Butterley Company's industrial site whatsoever.

p.s Talking of demolition at Chesterfield - do you remember the railway viaduct that stood alone in mid air, going nowhere and coming from nowhere, by the big island at the junction of the road from Birdholme and the turning to the M1? My lads always fancied abseiling from it. That was demolished around the same time that you're talking about wasn't it?

Does anyone on this forum still live in Amber Valley?

If so, it may be worth them writing to their constituency MP to raise awareness of the situation with them. As, I doubt if contact from someone living outside the constituency would have much effect.

Also, once the wall of No.8 Shop is down, Furnace Bank become much more visible from Butterley Hill, which will presumably help raise its profile.

Hi All,

I've been following this thread for a while now, and I'm pretty shocked to see the speed of the demolition of such a big piece of history for our area,

I'm not too sure what I can do about this situation, but I am a local resident that lives inside the constituency, but my writing skills are less than desireable for a offical letter to our local MP, but if anybody would be willing to pen up a letter, I would be more than willing to sign it as a local resident and deliver it to our MP,

and if there is anything I can do to assist please let me know,

Many Thanks

Steve

ICLOK's local, and although I'm not in Amber Valley I think we come under the same constituency (Derbyshire West). Although Pat McLoughlin is limited in what he can actively do himself, it's as well to let him know residents are concerned about what's happening with the site, if nothing else he'll make AVBC aware that people have expressed their concerns to him, plus with an election on the way and a matter of some taxpayer-funded double glazing potentially an issue:devil:, I'm sure he'll be keen to do all he can.

One last thing to remember - although the owners could pull the post-war sheds down with nothing more than a nod to AVBC's building control, doing anything to the earlier buildings needs listed building consent from the council. I suggest anyone in the area keeps a close watch out for planning notices appearing on/near the site (these have to be posted up by law) - if this happens, then it's time to start serious letter writing!

Suppose I'd better go see if our turkey's cooked yet, we ordered a small one from a local farmer and the smallest one he had was 14lb..... 😮

sougher the tube works came down about ten years ago when i worked up town (as we call chesterfield) they were on the railway side running from the island toward the residential area of birdholme.i can vaguely remember the old bridge, the former great central railway bridge, but that came down years ago,mid to late eighties??? ah well, somet else thats long gone eh.

Steve,i live about 0.7 miles from the site, but iclok is probably the best authority on the whole affair, and i think he,s the man to get in touch with our local mp,judy mallaber.who is labour.who is useless.but you never know......... 😉

just gone back on forum, the above should reply to jschwa, but applies to steve too i suppose!

I guess a letter to the local MP should be along the lines of:

"As constituency MP for Amber Valley, you should be aware that a historic major employer in the Amber Valley area, Butterley Engineering, went into administration in March 2009.

The site occupied by the company has a long history dating back to the formation of the Butterley Company in 1790 and still includes many unique and historic buildings and features. These include the original blast furnace from 1790, the stone built machine shops (with many notable architectural features), bath house and offices and the octagonal gatekeepers office (itself a grade 1 listed building).

The blast furnace is sited over the Butterley Tunnel of the Cromford Canal, where there is an underground wharf and various shafts and tunnels leading from the works down to the canal. The Friends of Cromford Canal are planning preservation of this section of canal and tunnel. The site is a unique and historic asset for Ripley, Amber Valley and England generally.

In November and December 2009 demolition of the works commenced, which to date has include demolition of the fabrication shops, cranes, post-war buildings and associated steelworks. The exact fate of the historic blast furnace and stone buildings is unclear, however, it is rumoured that the developers plan to demolish all buildings in the site and to bury the blast furnace prior to constructing houses on the site.

A number of local residents and people across the UK with an interest in industrial archeology are very concerned that these unique assets to the area would be lost forever if this were to happen.

I am requesting that you ensure that English Heritage and Amber Valley Council have followed appropriate procedures to ensure:
* That these historic assets are suitably protected until a full investigation of their significance can be made.
* This investigation should include assessment of the underground tunnels and shafts beneath the site which will influence future plans for the site.
* That any decisions on the future of these assets should be made in a clear, open and unbiased manner.
* That appropriate plans for their long term preservation can be made to retain these features as assets for the area.

As demolition work is currently under way, time is of the essence to ensure that, as a minimum no further demolition work is undertaken until the above actions are completed.

I await your support to ensure that due process to assess and protect these unique assets is followed.

Yours ......"

Any suggestions for improvements or changes?

Hi all,

Thanks for the outline of that letter,

if you don't mind I'll use that roughly if thats ok, then send it on and see what sort of response I'll get, where I live I had a stunning view of the works (until the trees go in the way) can remember as a child being able to see some massive structures being built there.

I'll also approach our local Councillor about this aswell, and see what they can recommend,

Many thanks :-)
