Ditzy - Referring to your entry of today (22nd Feb) on the Forum topic "Mines of the Tarmar Valley" regarding "righting mine entries in the data base", you mention "in derbys jugholes and noon nick could/should be on the same entry...".

Actually there is a big difference, Noon Nick is the name of the lead vein running north/south from just above Leawood Farm at Snitterton up Jugholes Combe (where there were shafts on the vein) and ending in Jugholes Wood. Jugholes cave system is a natural cave system sited at the extreme southern end of the Noon Nick Vein and is clearly shown on the 1767 John Nuttall's map of the area as a CAVE. I gave details of this problem in my previous entry on this particular forum on the 30th April, 2009, page 1, paragraph 4. If you want to look at John Nuttall's 1767 map please visit the Derbyshire Record Office at New Street, Matlock where it can be examined.

The earliest record I have of mining in the area is an extract from a Will of Henry Ferne of Bonsall dated around 1546/47 which mentions him owing mines in the Snitterton area including Holmes Vein, Rushen Vein and Nether and Upper Oxclose. Similarly the Noon Nick vein would also have been worked around this time. I have also extracted from the Matlock Barmaster's Record Books entries for Noon Nick mine and Jugholes as the old lead miner tended to sometimes refer to mining on the southern part of the vein as Jugholes. Incidently Snitterton Township (where the Noon Nick Vein and Jugholes lie) is within the Matlock Barmaster's jurisdiction (Snitterton Township however, is outside the Matlock Parish Boundary but within Darley Dale Parish Boundary, later South Darley Parish Boundary) - normally one finds that Mining Liberties boundaries roughly follow the Parish Boundaries, but this small area for lead mining purposes is an exception to the rule. There is also at the D.R.O. the South Darley Tithe Map (from memory dated in the 1850's) which shews the Townships of Snitterton and Wensley, plus the Fields with numbers and Field Names, in addition there is the Tithe Schedule shewing who owns the land, who rents what and who lives where, very interesting.

Please don't think I'm trying to criticise you, I'm not. I'm just trying to point out the big differences between the Noon Nick lead vein and the natural cave system of Jugholes SITED upon the Noon Nick vein. They are NOT the same but people (including "T'owd man") often mix them up.
