It's been 25 years since I've done Jug Holes, I used to take groups of scouts through during the Chatsworth scout camp 'Peak 85' I now have a 10 year old son who is keen to have a go at a bit of abseiling and a grovel around underground.

Unfortunately my ‘Caves of the Peak District’ has been misplaced over the yeas and I can’t fully remember the way through the system. I do remember some of it as follows:- from the top entrance - from the bottom of the pitch you follow an angled rift to the end then drop down to the left into a large chamber, after this point I can’t remember the way on. From the bottom entrance, with the sloping oil drum & lid, I remember the rail tracks into one chamber then through to another smaller chamber, up through a boulder choke on the right to another chamber which had a large split boulder at the top of the slope, the way forward from here also eludes me.

I would be very grateful if anyone could give a short description of the through trip from those points or if a survey is available that would be helpful.

Many thanks

Andy

Thanks again Ditzy,

I've been studying the survey, in your opinion would it be better to do it bottom up or top down for the first time? i.e. is it easier to find your way through better one way than the other.

Thanks,

Andy

Hi sorry to butt in, but i find climbing up more controlled than sliding down on the infamous masson mud,
both are good tho. And better still the formations in the upper series. enjoy !!
For taking a derbyshire key, the shaft is a great spot to brush up abb'ing and prussicing.

bottom to top is best, but drop a line down on the way past unless you are a happy climber on mud!
the bottom end is diffrent now, mr c made a new gate a few years ago when the adit was relined with rinkly tin pipe just need a derbys key
there are manky workings lower down that are not on the map so going in from the adit DONT go down!
also the daylight bits can be loose, i had my finger broken when bri knocked a rock down the ore shoot out of the steel rings 😠 muppet 😠
he works shifts now but we mite be able to meet up for a trip?

just sent you an email about another topic altogether.

I will be home in about a week for 3 weeks which are pretty busy, the 3 weeks at sea so I am free from early Dec on. I have got a new car by the way, so we would be good for some travelling - that Jeep was a thirsty brute...

Thanks Ditzy, the concensus appears to be 'bottom up' I'll drop a line down from the top and belay my lad up just to keep it safe.

Cheers,

Andy 🙂
