I thought Askam Brickworks got their clay from across the road behind Greenscoe Quarry (you can see it plainly on Google Earth). There's a special roadway they put in just opposite their entrance which is now on a big loop due to the re-alignment of the road about 15 years ago.
I hadn't realised they'd stopped using local clay.
I didn't think there was enough money in bricks to warrant importing the stuff. I knew they brought in some small amounts of clay for special jobs and about 25 years ago they used to employ a potter there to make garden pots and other items. He was a schoolteacher from Barrow.
The finest workers in stone are not copper or steel tools, but the gentle touches of air and water working at their leisure with a liberal allowance of time.
