Noticed this from train yesturday, as well as wht looked like a brickworks at the bottom of the hill it was situated upon. Same operation?

Dont know actually... there are definately no operating clay pit in the area.

Greenscoe Quarry closed decades ago. It was a prime site for 'Trundling' in my youth.. :lol:

That's a bit unusual, perhaps the clay came from Barrow's port, keeping in mind the Brickwoords did have it's own railway line at one point in time. Who knows eh..

I thought Askam Brickworks got their clay from across the road behind Greenscoe Quarry (you can see it plainly on Google Earth). There's a special roadway they put in just opposite their entrance which is now on a big loop due to the re-alignment of the road about 15 years ago.

I hadn't realised they'd stopped using local clay.

I didn't think there was enough money in bricks to warrant importing the stuff. I knew they brought in some small amounts of clay for special jobs and about 25 years ago they used to employ a potter there to make garden pots and other items. He was a schoolteacher from Barrow.
